Drake Maye’s strong 2025 MVP case
Talk about coming out of nowhere! 2025 has seen Maye turn from an anonymous rookie without a lot of hype and wins to his name. To an MVP candidate leading the Patriots back to playoff relevance. This out of nowhere turn around, and excellent form has seen him become a front runner for the 2025 NFL MVP.
Breakout stars always have a way of capturing fans’ imagination. As someone breaking through and joining the pantheon of superstars already established in our collective minds as fans is one of those exciting moments that make sports so exciting and meaningful to fans, and why we love following our chosen sport, which is what makes us so passionate.
Maye’s elite season production!
You can’t be an NFL MVP without putting up elite numbers, and he’s done that check mark with no problems. Starting with his passing yards, Maye is almost in a league of his own in this category. Literally, he’s one of four QBs this season to have 4,000 total passing yards as we head into the regular season’s final week. Having a total of 4,203 yards. But that’s far from all.
He’s also tied with Dak Prescott this season so far on passing touchdowns. With their thirty total tied, they are tied for third in the NFL for total passing touchdowns. This stat best shows his improvement from his rookie year. Doubling his total from 2024 before the season has even finished. Improving from his 15 passing touchdowns.
But the stat that makes Maye’s MVP case the best is his QB and pure passer rating because he’s been historic in that category. His passer rating and QBR rank among the league leaders (QBR listed as league-best), showing heโs not just piling up yards; heโs doing it extremely efficiently. Leading with Rating, a rating of 112.9, and a QB rating of 76.5. Putting him forever in that stat record books
Maye’s ability to take over and win games by himself!
Something any player worthy of being called a Most Valuable Player of the year is the ability to put the team on his back and win a game on his own, the difference between a pretty good player and a great player. And I’m sure I don’t have to remind anyone twice that’s something he’s shown he can do.
His week 16 performance against the Jets is the best proof of this. A day where he went 19 for 21 and threw for 256 passing yards and a historic five passing touchdowns. A literally near-perfect day he achieved while he was sick stands head and shoulders as the greatest performance of his young career so far. But it’s not the only incredible performance of his 2025 season.
Another notable performance was the week before against the Ravens. Drake Maye threw for 380 yards, making up most of the Patriots’ 453 total offensive yards, and threw for two touchdowns. And in the fourth quarter, with the Pats down 21-24 with five minutes left in the game, Maye led them down the field 89 yards down the field to make the winning score with two minutes left on the board. Showing his clutch gene is strong on top of everything else.
Maye’s leading the Pats to success!
There’s no better mark of what makes a MVP a MVP than making your team better, something that Maye has famously done this year. As seen by the fact that the Patriots have been in a rut since 2021, having not made the playoffs since then. Now have clinched a 2025 playoff spot as one of the best teams in the AFC and NFL.
Let’s not forget how much of a shock it was to the Patriots to do as well as they’ve had this year. As the NFL headed into 2025, the Patriots were coming off back-to-back 4-13 seasons. And with Maye coming into his own, the Patriots have won 13 total games and could be 14 if they beat the Dolphins in the regular season finale. Thanks a bunch for reading!
