The Texans returned to their winning ways after salvaging a close game to the Jacksonville Jaguars. One of the big highlights of the game was Nico Collins, who is currently the number 1 performing wide receiver on the year. The game wasn’t entirely pretty, though, and despite the win, there are still issues that the Texans will want to fix (including one glaring issue).
There Is Room On Offense For Both Collins and Diggs
One of the big questions going into the year for the Texans was which of their star wide receivers (Stefon Diggs or Collins) would be the WR 1. So far, they tried to roll with two main wide receivers, but Collins has gotten the larger share of targets.
After the game with the Jaguars, though, it has become apparent that Collins getting the most work will not stop Diggs from getting his numbers. Despite Collins’ huge game, Diggs still caught five footballs for 69 yards and ran for a TD. Opposing defenses will have two WR 1’s to worry about when they gameplan for the Texans this season.
Penalties Are Still An Issue
Houston saw good production from their stars against the Jaguars, but the overall team still has one Achilles Heel: Penalties. They got 12 flags in the game, which is more than they drew in the loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
It’s not only the amount of flags that are concerning, but where and when they occur. Several times during the game, Houston could have had points but fell out of range due to penalties. One drive, in particular, had an illegal man downfield call after a holding. This brutal stretch kicked the offense out of the red zone.
Texans Defense Is An Underrated Unit
This isn’t to say that the Texans will be rated one of the best defenses in the league. That would be hard to argue after giving up tons of points to the Vikings (although who hasn’t?). Houston’s defense is, however, good enough to win games, and Sunday’s game was a perfect example. Tank Bigsby almost sealed a win for the Jaguars with a 58-yard run down the sideline late in the game. He reached the endzone, but the official called him out at around the 4-yard line.
From there, the Texans made an impressive goal-line stand. A notable play came from Derek Stingley Jr., who had Wide Receiver Christian Kirk covered for most of that game, including a big incompletion during the goal line stand. Eric Murray was also able to record a big sack on third down against Jaguars Quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Houston hosts the Buffalo Bills in a marquee AFC matchup next Sunday.
