West Ham Set To Part Ways With 61-Year-Old Scottish International In Shocking Way

David Moyes disappointed while coaching West Ham

David Moyes and West Ham United are set to go their separate ways after the season ends, marking the end of the Scottish manager’s nearly five-year tenure with the London club. In his second spell as the club’s manager, Moyes, 61, finally brought an end to West Ham’s 43-year trophy drought by clinching the Europa Conference League last season. However, the pressure had been mounting on the Scottish coach due to the team’s recent string of poor performances, which reached its peak with a devastating 5-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

West Ham made an official announcement on Monday, revealing that Moyes will be leaving the club when the season ends. This news comes just hours after sources said the Irons had agreed to hire ex-Wolves and Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui. When asked, Moyes said:

“I have really enjoyed working with everyone at West Ham, and I would like to thank the board for giving me the opportunity to manage this great club,” Moyes said in a statement. I have enjoyed four and a half brilliant years at West Ham, and the club is in a stronger position than when I returned back in 2019. When I joined West Ham for a second time, the club was one place above the relegation zone, and it has been a terrific journey to have achieved three consecutive seasons in Europe.

“I would like to thank all the players for their support, and all the success they have achieved, over the last four and a half years. I wish my eventual successor, the directors, the players, the staff, the fans, and everybody at West Ham, all the very best for the future.”

Moyes’ second tenure at West Ham is set to become his third-longest stint with a club, following his initial roles at Preston North End (234 games) and Everton (518).

According to sources, discussions have taken place between West Ham officials and Julen Lopetegui regarding the potential of him becoming the next head coach. West Ham’s board has officially announced that they are currently in the process of finding a successor for Moyes. They also expressed their gratitude towards him for his dedicated years of service.

“On behalf of everyone at West Ham United, I would like to offer our sincere thanks and gratitude to David for the contribution he has made to the football club during his time as manager,” joint-chairman David Sullivan said.

“David has been responsible for a period of great progress and success in our history, and we are extremely grateful for all of his hard work, commitment and dedication to the role.

“By making this announcement now, it allows David to get the send-off he deserves from the West Ham supporters and for us all to show our appreciation to him at our final home fixture of the season against Luton Town on Saturday.”

Moyes first became famous as a coach at Preston North End. He then became the manager of Everton for 11 years, where he managed to put together an excellent squad on a tight budget. Scot Sir Alex Ferguson saw how well Moyes performed at Everton and chose him to take over as manager when Ferguson retired in May 2013. He then managed Sunderland and Real Sociedad before starting his first job as West Ham boss in November 2017. Even though Moyes was only in charge for six months, he had the team finish 13th in the Premier League and keep them from being relegated.

Upon his return for a second time in December 2019, he repeated his earlier success in leading the team to avoid relegation. Moyes has been in charge of more than 500 Premier League games. He will lead West Ham in their last two games, which are against Luton Town on Saturday and Manchester City on the last day of the season.
