The Seattle Seahawks have given their fans a roller-coaster ride this offseason. When the team released Tyler Lockett, fans understood the salary cap implications. Then, the team traded quarterback Geno Smith and wide receiver DK Metcalf, leaving fans wondering whether this team was headed for a complete rebuild. A few days later, the roster is looking much better, thanks to the signing of Sam Darnold. The Seahawks have made another big splash in free agency, landing four-time Pro Bowl defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.
Seattle Seahawks Sign DeMarcus Lawrence
Reports indicate the deal is a three-year, $42 million contract with $18 million guaranteed. The veteran defensive end has spent the last 11 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys after being drafted in the second round in the 2014 NFL Draft. Dallas has plenty of other contracts to worry about and had to let Lawrence walk. Throughout his career, he has been a solid defensive end. In 11 seasons, he has amassed 450 total tackles, 126 quarterback hits, 61.5 sacks, 21 forced fumbles, and two interceptions.
The Seattle Seahawks have plenty of young talent on the defensive side of the ball. Head coach Mike MacDonald is one of the best scheme creators in the league. He should have no issue getting Lawrence in positions to succeed. Lawrence was one of the many Cowboys who suffered injuries last season, playing in only four games. Seattle hopes he is back to 100% and ready to show he still has plenty left in the tank.
2025 Outlook
On paper, the Seattle Seahawks look like they could challenge for the division crown. While the Los Angeles Rams have made many splashy signings, the Seahawks have not been quiet, either. Much of it hinges on Darnold proving that last year was not a one-hit-wonder season. He set career highs in many categories, leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 14-3 record.
One worry for this team is the offensive line. They haven’t addressed this issue in free agency so far, and the offensive line did not play well last year. We saw in the playoffs what happens when Darnold is under pressure. Seattle has had a good offseason so far, and the Lawrence signing makes it even better. Can they continue to build the roster and compete in the NFC?
