2026 Tulsa Shootout Winged Outlaw Heats: Results, Analysis, and Standout Performances
The River Spirit Expo Center is loud, it smells like methanol, and on Wednesday night, it was the battleground for one of the most grueling tests in dirt racing. The 41st Annual Tulsa Shootout pressed forward with the Winged Outlaw division, a class known for raw speed and unforgiving setups. We saw 292 drivers take to the clay, each looking to survive the chaos of 29 heat races.
In this building, winning your heat isn’t enough. You have to pass cars. The passing points system is the judge, jury, and executioner of your weekend. If you start on the pole and win, you did your job, but you didn’t gain ground. If you start in the back and carve your way to the front, you become a legend. Wednesday night in Tulsa gave us a glimpse of who came to play and who might be loading up the trailer early.
Pursley Puts on a Passing Points Clinic
If you want to know what perfection looks like in a Micro Sprint, watch the tape of FuelTech Race 189. Daison Pursley, starting dead last in the 10th position, didn’t just navigate traffic; he dissected it. In an eight-lap sprint, passing nine cars is a mathematical improbability on a track this tight. Yet, Pursley found a grip where others saw the wall.
He drove from 10th to 1st, earning maximum passing points. That performance makes him only the third driver this week to pull off such a feat across all six divisions. It’s the kind of drive that sends a message to the rest of the pits: Pursley isn’t just here to compete for a Golden Driller; he’s here to take it.
NASCAR Stars and Dirt Ringers Mix It Up at Tulsa
The beauty of the Tulsa Shootout is the entry list. You have local heroes battling national touring stars. Kyle Larson, fresh off a plane from winning the High Limit International in Perth, Australia, didn’t show any signs of jet lag. The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion rolled off fifth in Race 191 and wheeled his machine to a solid second-place finish. It wasn’t the win, but a net gain of three spots in the points game is crucial for surviving the qualifiers.
Ty Gibbs also brought his talents to the dirt. Starting deep in the field in 10th during Race 201, Gibbs managed to claw his way up to sixth. It’s a respectable run that keeps him alive, but he’ll have work to do as the week progresses.
Meanwhile, Ricky Thornton Jr. continues to prove he can drive anything with wheels. The Dirt Late Model superstar put on a show in Race 193 of the Tulsa Shootout, charging from seventh on the grid to park it in victory lane. That plus-six differential is the kind of math you need to lock into a good spot for the upcoming qualifiers.
The Grind of 29 Heats
The sheer volume of racing on Wednesday for the Tulsa Shootout was a testament to the track crew and the drivers’ focus. We saw massive charges from guys like Joey Amantea and TJ Stark, both of whom matched Thornton’s effort by driving from 6th to 1st in their respective heats. Michael Faccinto also turned heads, hustling from 8th to grab a runner-up spot in Race 196.
For the 112 drivers who maximized their passing points at Tulsa, the dream of a Golden Driller is alive and well. They advance to the eight Qualifying Races set for later this week. For the rest, the road just got a lot steeper. Here is the full breakdown of how the field shook out on Wednesday night.

The High-Stakes Chaos To Come
Wednesday night at the Tulsa Shootout is always a grind, but it sets the table for the chaos to come. The cream is starting to rise to the top. When you have nearly 300 cars, just making the qualifiers is an accomplishment, but the heavy hitters like Pursley, Seavey, and Thornton Jr. aren’t here to make qualifiers. They are here to take home a Driller.
The track at Tulsa was racy, the sliders were aggressive, and we are only just getting started. If you aren’t paying attention to what’s happening inside the Expo Center right now, you’re missing the best grassroots racing of the year.
