NASCAR Partners with POET As Official Bioethanol Fuel Provider In Major Sustainability Push
NASCAR has taken a bold step that could reshape how fans, teams, and the broader motorsports world view fuel and sustainability in racing. On Feb. 13, the sanctioning body announced a landmark partnership with POET.
The Real Reason NASCAR Tapped Poet
The world’s largest biofuel producer, naming the company the Official Bioethanol Partner of NASCAR and positioning the series as the first major motorsport to integrate zero-carbon bioethanol into its competition fuel blend.
This isn’t a cosmetic logo deal. Under the new agreement, POET’s advanced bioethanol, a high-octane, plant-based fuel with zero life-cycle carbon emissions, will be blended into NASCAR’s Sunoco-branded race fuel.
That means the thunderous V8 engines at Cup, Truck, and O’Reilly Auto Parts Series events may soon be running on a fuel that not only delivers competitive performance but also aligns with broader environmental objectives.
Eric Nyquist, NASCAR’s Chief Impact Officer, framed the partnership as both a competitive and technological milestone. He emphasized that the alliance with POET reflects the series commitment to use its platform “as a real-world proving ground for innovation,” all while staying true to the sport’s performance DNA.
The effort meshes with NASCAR’s IMPACT sustainability initiative, which aims to reduce emissions and demonstrate how motorsports can be part of a cleaner future without sacrificing horsepower or spectacle.
Why POET’s Involvement Counts
In practical terms, POET’s involvement will be visible on every NASCAR fuel can and even at key moments of each event: the company will sponsor the POET Restart Zone at all NASCAR-owned tracks, a branded area tied to some of the most intense on-track action.
It’s a clever piece of positioning that fuses fan engagement with technical evolution, reinforcing that this partnership is about more than bumper stickers. Jeff Broin, POET’s founder and CEO, called the collaboration a “game-changer.”
This phrasing might feel dramatic in another context, but it rings appropriate here, given the potential implications. Bioethanol’s high-octane properties can help enhance engine performance, and its cleaner combustion supports healthier conditions for drivers, crews, and fans alike.
What’s Next
For NASCAR, the deal signals a willingness to lean into innovation while preserving the sport’s essence: loud engines, fierce competition, and technological experimentation. It’s a reminder that modern racing isn’t just about laps and flags, it’s about how the sport evolves with shifting expectations around performance, environment, and the mechanics of speed. Thanks a bunch!
