Philadelphia Eagles Running Back On the Doorstep Of History

New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles Saquon Barkley

Philadelphia Eagles Running Back Saquon Barkley had a tremendous regular season and has kept it going during the NFL Playoffs. He is a mere 30 rushing yards away from passing Hall of Fame Running Back Terrell Davis for the most rushing yards in a single season including the playoffs. Barkley is also 150 yards away from becoming the Philadelphia Eagles postseason rushing leader and 169 rushing yards from surpassing John Riggins for the most rushing yards in a single postseason.

Barkley has much to play for and will also turn 28 on the day of Super Bowl LIX. He will look to celebrate a birthday with some history and raise the Vince Lombardi Trophy to cap off his special day. Will the Philadelphia Eagles and Barkley stop the Kansas City Chiefs in their quest for NFL history?

Saquon Barkley Season Summary

Barkley signed a three-year $37.75 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in March 2024. He spent the first six seasons of his career with the division-rival New York Giants. He had a successful tenure in New York but unlocked a new level of success in Philadelphia. He led the league in carries and rushing yards during the regular season.

The star running back needed 101 yards in Week 18 to break the single-season rushing record. The record was set by Eric Dickerson in 1984. Philadelphia decided to bench Barkley in Week 18 against the Giants as the team geared up for the NFL Playoffs. With how Barkley and the Eagles have looked during the postseason, that move looked like it was a shrewd one. Philadelphia has one more game standing between them and immortality.

Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl Blueprint

The Eagles are facing a Kansas City Chiefs team looking to do something that had never been done in the Super Bowl era. Kansas City is eyeing a three-peat for the first time in the Super Bowl era. Philadelphia’s path to a Super Bowl win runs through Barkley. That has been the case in the regular season and Philadelphia’s dominant run in the NFC Playoffs.

Barkley will face a stiff test in New Orleans next week as the Chiefs have one of the league’s best defenses. Kansas City had the league’s eighth-best rush defense in the regular season but has taken a step back in that department in the playoffs. The Buffalo Bills rushed for 147 yards in the AFC Championship Game. Kansas City is a veteran-laden team and Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will ensure that Barkley does not wreck the game.

Kansas City will presumably crowd the line of scrimmage in the hopes of stopping Barkley. That will put the game in the hands of Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts. He has been an inconsistent passer this season but played well in the NFC Championship Game against the Washington Commanders. He had 246 passing yards and 4 total touchdowns. He had one passing touchdown and three on the ground. The Chiefs will force Hurts to beat them through the air, and if he can do so, the Eagles will be Super Bowl champions.

Final Thoughts

Barkley has already put together one of the best seasons for a running back in league history but is far from done. He still has his sights set on more records as he hopes to help the Philadelphia Eagles win Super Bowl LIX next Sunday. If the star running back can play well, and provide Philadelphia’s offense with balance, they should have a successful evening. It will take everything the Philadelphia Eagles have to stop the Chiefs as they look to make history.
