Philadelphia Eagles Release TE C.J. Uzomah

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that they cut their veteran tight end, C.J. Uzomah. Though it was an unexpected move, bringing the news now has surprised fans and analysts alike since the team will soon start the new season. The Uzomah move might be the bellwether of a massive overhaul of Philadelphia’s roster strategy.

31-year-old veteran C.J. Uzomah signed a one-year, $1.37 million deal, $795 million of which was guaranteed, joining the Eagles on April 11, 2024. Supposedly, this move was intended to shore up the tight-end position, but the organization seems to have thought otherwise. Uzomah’s time in the City of Brotherly Love is going to be much more brief than that.

Uzomah had spent the 2023 season as a member of the New York Jets before joining the Philadelphia Eagles. He played in 12 games, where he caught eight passes for 58 yards and one touchdown. While his last-season performance might not have been at its best, he was viewed as another experienced addition for Philadelphia. The Jets had earlier released him in March to create salary cap space, paving the way for his short tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Career Achievements and Impact

Uzomah has had a great time throughout his NFL career since the Cincinnati Bengals drafted him in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He posted 192 receptions for 1,881 yards and 16 touchdowns across 106 games. Most importantly, his time with the Bengals and then with the Jets proved that he could be effective as both a blocker and a receiver.

Uzomah’s release comes with the Philadelphia Eagles zeroing in on other tight-end options currently on their roster. Dallas Goedert is standing tall at the center with the inclusion of Grant Calcaterra and Albert Okwuegbunam Jr. This may be evidence that, upon leaning more towards these guys, or just because the new system they are going to play is one the team doesn’t have enough about yet.

Looking Ahead

The Philadelphia Eagles have also signed offensive lineman Jason Poe to correspond with the move. Poe went undrafted in 2022 and has spent time on both the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets practice squads. This likely points to an Eagles team trying to solidify the depth they have at the offensive line position with the season underway.

As the Philadelphia Eagles begin to make finer adjustments to their roster, everyone—from fans to analysts—will be sitting on the edge of their seats, awaiting the outcome of this new performance in the coming season. With these changes in place, the direction and strategy of the team will be scrutinized as they prepare for what looks like an adventurous season ahead.
