Pittsburgh Steelers Trade for Jonnu Smith Ahead of 2025 NFL Season
The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a position where they are putting all their chips down on the table and making moves to win now. While it is not necessarily the biggest move in the last 20 minutes for the team, they have acquired a veteran tight end in Jonnu Smith from the Miami Dolphins. Let’s take a deeper dive into what this means going forward for both teams as the news continues to roll out.
Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to add to their roster after trading for cornerback Jalen Ramsey as they were able to agree to a second trade with the Miami Dolphins. The Steelers were able to add tight end Jonnu Smith in exchange for a late-round pick, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. As a whole, Pittsburgh gave away Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick in exchange for Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith, and a 2027 seventh-round pick.
As part of this trade, Smith was given a one-year contract extension for $12 million. That means he will be under contract through the 2026 season. With tight end Pat Freirmuth, the tight end room is going to be loaded. Smith is teaming up with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith for the third time in his career and the Pro Bowler finished his only season with the Miami Dolphins with 88 receptions on 111 targets for 884 yards (10.0 yards per catch) with eight touchdowns in a career season.
Now he is paired up with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and these moves made official, the Pittsburgh Steelers are 15th in the Super Bowl odds at +3500 according to DraftKings Sportsbook. It will be interesting to see if Smith can continue to develop into an elite tight end and make the team even better going forward.
