New Orleans Saints Grab Louisville QB Tyler Shough In 2nd Round Of NFL Draft
The New Orleans Saints came into the 2025 NFL Draft with a need at quarterback. Derek Carr may miss the entire season with a shoulder injury, and the combination of Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener is not inspiring confidence. Many expected them to be in the market for a quarterback at No. 9 overall, but they solidified their offensive line. With the 40th pick, the team decided it was time to pull the trigger, landing Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough.
New Orleans Saints Draft QB Tyler Shough
The Shedeur Sanders slide continues. But enough about him. Shough has emerged as a top quarterback prospect in this draft over the past few weeks. Reports indicated teams were very high on him, and he likely wouldn’t make it out of the second round. Last season with the Cardinals, he threw for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He was given the extra year because of the COVID-19 pandemic and made the most of it.
He joins an offense that has some good pieces. Alvin Kamara is one of the best dual-threat running backs in the league, and Chris Olave has shown some good promise. Brandin Cooks is a savvy veteran who can help a young quarterback. New head coach Kellen Moore gets to try to mold a young quarterback for the future.
Low Risk Pick
While some criticized the New Orleans Saints for not taking a quarterback in the first round, this pick comes with much less pressure. A first-round quarterback is expected to start for multiple years. You are tying the next half-decade of your franchise to the player. In this situation, if Tyler Shough doesn’t work out, moving off him isn’t a big deal. We’re seeing this with the Tennessee Titans and Will Levis.
The Titans took Levis in the second round. No one is slamming them for taking the former Kentucky quarterback in the second round. Had they taken him in the first round, he would be labeled as one of the biggest draft busts, and the organization would be crucified for the pick. In this case, the reset with Cam Ward and it’s all good. The same thing can happen with the Saints and Shough.
Final Thoughts
This is a solid pick for the New Orleans Saints. It is a low-risk pick that could work out for them. The best-case scenario is that they have found their QB of the future and can focus elsewhere in later drafts. If not, they can reset and try again next year.
