Todd Monken Is Expected To Become the Next Offensive Coordinator Of the New York Giants
With John Harbaugh expected to become the New York Giants’ head coach on a massive new contract, the details of his new staff will begin in the coming weeks. Former Ravens Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken is expected to join Harbaugh in New York with the Giants, per multiple reports. He’s been the offensive coordinator in Baltimore for the last three seasons and has done a nice job.
Getting Monken Is Huge For
Thereโs still a process to go through, and Monken has interviewed for at least one HC job in this cycle. The expectation is that he would join Harbaugh and work directly with QB Jaxson Dart, who was the lone bright spot for the Giants last season. Getting the right offensive coordinator is massive for Harbaugh, as it is key for Dart’s development. Lamar Jackson thrived under Monken in Baltimore, and pairing Dart with Monken is exactly what he needs to take his game to another level in his second season.
Being that Harbaugh isn’t going to call the plays, it will all be on Monken to elevate an offense that had its ups and downs last year. In three seasons with the Ravens, the offense didn’t rank lower than 12th in points per game, and this past season was the weakest of his tenure, ranking 11th. That’s still extremely impressive, given that Lamar Jackson missed time and they remained a competitive unit with Tyler Huntley and Cooper Rush at the helm.
The Giants Offense Has The Pieces To Be Great
When fully healthy, the Giants have a ton of talent on the field. Dart showed he is the franchise quarterback, capable of taking over games and leading the team down the field. Dart is a big reason many coaches coveted this job, and it’ll be fun to watch how Monken develops him. Cam Skattebo injected life into the team last year and will likely start at running back when he’s fully healthy next year.
The receiving core does need work, especially with Malik Nabers’ timeline to return still uncertain. Wan’Dale Robinson had a breakout year and will command a big contract. Robinson had 92 receptions for 1,014 yards and 4 touchdowns. He built a strong connection with Dart, and we’ll see if New York retains him this offseason. Another alternative could be drafting a wide receiver with the 5th overall pick in the NFL Draft.
Carnell Tate, out of Ohio State, would be the leading candidate to select. This past season, Tate hauled in 51 receptions for 875 yards and 9 touchdowns for the Buckeyes. At only 20 years old, heโs an advanced route runner and recorded zero drops throughout the season. Tate also secured an impressive 85.7% of his contested catch opportunities. He would be an incredible fit alongside Malik Nabers.
Big Blue Is Officially Back
For the first time in a while, the Giants have finally hired a proven winner who can turn their franchise around. Joe Schoen and others set their sights on Harbaugh immediately when fired by Baltimore, and got the job done soon after the interview concluded yesterday. The deal will likely be around $20 million per year, making him one of the top-paid coaches in football. Heโll have massive power in the organization, which is something a coach hasnโt had with the Giants in quite some time.
Landing Harbaugh is the biggest of what the Giants hope will be many more wins with the former Super Bowl champion leading them. He will start building the rest of his staff once the deal is official, as the Giants look to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2022.
