Minnesota Vikings Acquire Quarterback Sam Howell During 2025 NFL Draft
The Minnesota Vikings acquired Quarterback Sam Howell from the Seattle Seahawks in the middle of the 2025 NFL Draft. Minnesota received Howell and the teams swapped the 142 and 172nd overall picks in this year’s draft.Â
Seattle drafted Notre Dame Defensive End Rylie Mills and No. 142 overall. The Vikings are about to make their selection at No. 172 overall. Howell was drafted by the Washington Commanders in the 5th round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He played 17 games in 2023 and tossed a league-leading 21 interceptions. He spent 2024 with the Seattle Seahawks and did not play much. How will Howell fit with the Minnesota Vikings?
Minnesota Vikings Acquire Sam Howell
Howell will provide stability to the team’s quarterback situation. Minnesota will enter 2025 with J.J. McCarthy as the team’s starting quarterback. McCarthy will enter the season having missed his rookie season with a knee injury. He had a second surgery on the injured knee in November. These injury woes make it tough to know what to expect from McCarthy in 2025.
Final Thoughts
Howell will be the team’s backup quarterback heading into the offseason program. If McCarthy is ineffective or still hurt, Howell can take over the starting job. Minnesota has also been linked to Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins this offseason. With the trade for Howell, the Minnesota Vikings may not be done making moves at the quarterback position.
