Green Bay Packers Young Defender Set To Miss 4th Straight Game; Injury Worse Than Initially Thought
The Green Bay Packers’ defense will be without a key rotational piece for at least another week, as rookie defensive end Lukas Van Ness has been ruled out for the upcoming Monday night matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. This marks the fourth consecutive game Van Ness will miss due to a foot injury, and head coach Matt LaFleur has expressed that the recovery has been slower than anticipated.
Green Bay Packers Lukas Van Ness: A Setback in the Healing Process
Van Ness sustained the foot injury late in the first half of the Packers’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 6 and has not practiced since. The team initially hoped for a quicker return, but the healing process has proven to be more complex.
“Absolutely,” LaFleur said when asked if the injury was more significant than initially feared. “It did not heal as quickly as we thought. Injuries are always a tough deal. Sometimes they’re a moving target… The hope was we’d have him back before this, and that hasn’t been the case.”
LaFleur was clear that the delayed timeline is not due to a lack of effort from the first-round pick. In hindsight, placing Van Ness on injured reserve might have been an option, but the team is not considering that move at this time, and surgery was not required for the injury.
Impact on the Packers’ Defense
Van Ness’s extended absence is a blow to the depth of the Packers’ pass rush. While not a starter, he had carved out a significant role in the defensive line rotation, providing energy and pressure off the edge. Without him, the Packers have relied more heavily on starters Micah Parsons and Rashan Gary, with Kingsley Enagbare seeing increased snaps as the primary backup.
The lack of depth was noticeable in recent games, and his absence will be particularly felt against a formidable opponent like the Philadelphia Eagles. Facing an offensive line known for its strength and a mobile quarterback in Jalen Hurts, having a fresh rotation of pass rushers is critical.
Looking Ahead
The Packers are taking a cautious approach with their promising rookie, ensuring he is fully healthy before he returns to the field. LaFleur’s comments suggest that while there is disappointment in the slow recovery, the focus remains on Van Ness’s long-term health. For now, the defense will need to continue to rely on its veterans and other depth players to step up and fill the void left by his absence as they prepare for a tough test on Monday night.
