The Green Bay Packers may not be done reshaping their secondary just yet. While most of the offseason attention has focused on Green Bay’s additions at cornerback, one NFL analyst believes those moves could eventually put Carrington Valentine in danger of losing his roster spot entirely.
In a recent Bleacher Report analysis looking at the best player who could still be cut from every NFL roster, Valentine was identified as a potential surprise candidate for Green Bay heading into the 2026 season.
Green Bay Packers Have Quietly Added Major Competition at Cornerback
At first glance, the idea of Valentine being cut seems surprising. The former seventh-round pick started games for the Packers over the last two seasons and showed flashes of becoming a reliable contributor in Green Bay’s secondary. However, the Packers have aggressively reworked the cornerback room this offseason.
Green Bay added veteran cornerback Benjamin St-Juste in free agency while also drafting highly regarded rookie Brandon Cisse. Those additions immediately increased competition for playing time.
According to multiple reports, the Packers were unhappy with the inconsistency in the secondary last season, especially regarding explosive plays and touchdown passes allowed. That puts players like Valentine firmly under the microscope entering training camp.
Carrington Valentine Struggled During the 2025 Season
Carrington Valentine’s 2025 season was a mixed bag. While he remained a valuable rotational piece and occasionally flashed strong coverage ability, opposing quarterbacks consistently targeted him throughout the year. Reports noted that Valentine allowed seven touchdown receptions last season while surrendering a passer rating above 120 when targeted. Those struggles became even more significant after Green Bay’s defense failed to consistently hold up late in key games.
The Green Bay Packers clearly recognized the issue. General manager Brian Gutekunst openly discussed the need to add more players to the secondary before the draft, and Green Bay followed through by investing additional resources into the position. That type of roster investment often creates difficult decisions for veterans and former contributors.
Brandon Cisse Could Change the Packers’ Secondary Plans
One of the biggest factors in Valentine’s future may simply come down to how quickly Brandon Cisse develops. ESPN recently pointed out that Valentine was already on uncertain footing before Green Bay drafted Cisse. While the Packers historically do not rush rookies into major roles, Cisse’s progression during camp and preseason could dramatically impact the depth chart.
If Cisse proves ready to contribute immediately, Green Bay may prioritize younger players with higher long-term upside. The Packers also still have veteran cornerback Keisean Nixon competing for snaps, creating even more pressure at the position. That said, Valentine still has a path to making the roster. The former Kentucky Wildcats defensive back already has starting experience in Green Bay’s system, something that still carries value for the coaching staff. He also remains relatively inexpensive and has contributed on special teams during his NFL career. But the NFL can change quickly, especially for late-round draft picks.
The Packers have made it clear they want more depth, athleticism, and playmaking ability in the secondary after last season’s defensive inconsistencies. As a result, training camp could become one of the most competitive roster battles on the entire team. Valentine may not be guaranteed to get cut, but the fact analysts are even discussing the possibility shows how much Green Bay’s cornerback room has changed in just a few months.
