Report: Green Bay Packers Almost Traded Young Offensive Weapon At The Deadline
The Green Bay Packers remained quiet at the NFL trade deadline, but a new report reveals they were much closer to making a move than previously thought. The team nearly traded tight end Luke Musgrave, but a devastating injury to their starter, Tucker Kraft, forced a last-minute change of plans that has reshaped the team’s depth chart.
Green Bay Packers Almost Traded Luke Musgrave
According to a report from Justis Mosqueda of Acme Packing Company, the Packers were in advanced discussions to trade Luke Musgrave ahead of the deadline. With Kraft emerging as the clear TE1, Musgrave, a former second-round pick who had fallen out of favor, was deemed expendable.
“We would’ve traded Luke Musgrave to either the Denver Broncos or the Jacksonville Jaguars for like a fifth-round pick,” Mosqueda reported. “For a while it looked like it was going to happen, apparently.”
The move would have been a quiet admission that the 2023 second-round pick had not lived up to expectations. However, fate intervened in a significant way.
An Injury Forces a Change of Plans
The landscape of the Packers’ tight end room changed dramatically when Tucker Kraft suffered a season-ending torn ACL. Kraft had been enjoying a breakout season, establishing himself as a primary target in the passing game with 32 catches for 489 yards and six touchdowns in just eight games.
Suddenly, a position of perceived depth became dangerously thin. Compounding the issue, the Packers had also recently lost tight end Ben Sims, who was claimed on waivers by the Minnesota Vikings. Faced with the loss of their top two tight ends in short order, the front office had no choice but to pull Musgrave off the trade block. What was nearly a disastrous move became a necessary reversal.
A Second Chance for Musgrave
The unfortunate injury to Kraft has created a new opportunity for Luke Musgrave to reclaim a significant role in the offense. After a rookie season that was derailed by injuries, he had seen his role diminish significantly. Through the early part of this season, he had just nine catches for 88 yards.
Now, Musgrave is thrust back into the starting lineup. The Packers will need him to step up immediately and fill the void left by Kraft. His performance in the coming weeks will be critical for the team’s offensive success and could determine his long-term future in Green Bay. What was almost an exit has turned into a crucial second chance.
