Green Bay Packers Defensive Line Thriving Under New Positional Coach
The Green Bay Packers have been dominant on defense this season. Many have attributed this to acquiring Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys. While he has had a huge impact, the defensive line as a whole has been dominant this year. The Packers didn’t change many people on their coaching staff, but did hire DeMarcus Covington as the new defensive line coach. That move seems to be paying dividends through the first two weeks of the NFL season.
Green Bay Packers’ New Defensive Line Coach Making An Impact
Through the first two weeks, the Green Bay Packers have controlled the line of scrimmage. As a team, they have eight sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Rashan Gary leads the team with 2.5 sacks through the first two games. These stats don’t tell the whole story. The line has created countless pressures, which have led to bad throws, incomplete passes, and turnovers. Detroit and Washington, two teams that lean on their offense, haven’t been able to move the ball at all.
DeMarcus Covington was with the New England Patriots from 2017 to 2024 in various roles. His time under the legendary Bill Belichick helped hone his coaching skills. Covington was the defensive coordinator for the Patriots last year under Jerod Mayo. When the team decided to go with Mike Vrabel, the Green Bay Packers scooped him up.
Defense Has People High On Green Bay
The buzz around the Green Bay Packers is at an all-time high. It isn’t just that the team is 2-0. It is how they have done it. The offense, led by Jordan Love, has looked good despite injuries on the offensive line and at wide receiver. The scores at the end of the fourth quarter don’t tell the story of how dominant the team has been. Many of the points scored by the Lions and Commanders have come in garbage time, when the Packers are playing more of a prevent defense to kill the clock.
They look like a complete team, and the hype is warranted. It is important to note that Super Bowls are not won in the first two weeks of the season. However, teams can dig themselves a hole. The stats on 0-2 teams making the playoffs don’t lie. It is hard to make the postseason, even with seven teams making it, when the season starts with two losses. The Green Bay Packers have taken care of business and started the season 2-0. The defense looks like it is championship caliber and is looking to bring another Super Bowl to Green Bay.
