Key Takeaways from Kansas City Chiefs’ 9/18 Team Press Conference
This morning, the Kansas City Chiefs made multiple roster moves official. They signed Linebacker Cole Christiansen and Running Back Keaontay Ingram to the active roster. Additionally, they added Tight End Peyton Hendershot and Running Back Kareem Hunt to the practice squad. In a final move, Isiah Pacheco was placed on the injury reserve list due to an ongoing health issue.
Following these announcements, the Chiefs held their weekly Wednesday press conference. Head Coach Andy Reid, Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and Cornerback Trent McDuffie all addressed the media, providing key insights on the Chiefs current state and upcoming game. Here are the top takeaways from the press conference.

Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid opened the press conference with an update on Isiah Pachecoโs condition, confirming that the running back is headed to injured reserve. โHeโs been put on IR, heโs having surgery today,โ Reid said. โI canโt give you a time when heโll return. Weโll just see if itโs this season or next, but weโll see how he does as he goes here.โ
Reid also spoke about the teamโs recent addition of Running Back Kareem Hunt. โWeโll get him in here and get some work, kind of get him in the swing of playing,โ Reid explained. โWeโll just see as the game gets closer and how things go. Weโll try to get him in a position where heโs ready to play this week, next week, or the following week.โ
Reid hinted that Hunt may play this week for the Chiefs against the Atlanta Falcons, though nothing is confirmed. The head coach also commented on Keaontay Ingramโs promotion to the active roster, praising his performance in training camp: โHe had a really good camp for us, we felt comfortable moving him up. If youโre moving up, youโre expected to be ready to play, and I think heโs done that.โ
Patrick Mahomes On Kareem Hunt and Offensive Adjustments
Patrick Mahomes shared his thoughts on Kareem Huntโs return to the Kansas City Chiefs, focusing on theirย relationship. โAt the end of the day, man, I just root for the person to keep becoming a better person, and the football is secondary,โ Mahomes said. โBut Iโm glad to have him back in the building.โ
Mahomes also addressed Huntโs potential production on the field. โA guy that plays hard plays physical catches the ball out of the backfield, still has explosion between the tackles,โ he noted, expressing confidence in Huntโs ability to contribute to the offense once ready.
Mahomes also spoke on the Chiefs mindset as they prepare for a road game against the Falcons. โThe mindset is that you have to come in with the mentality and just sharpen up on your details,โ he said. โOffensively, we have to sharpen up, starting with me. The defense is playing great, and theyโre going to keep playing good, but weโve got to continue to get better with the little things.โ
Trent McDuffie On Defense and Team Growth
Cornerback Trent McDuffie reflected on the Chiefs 2-0 record and how narrow the margins have been in both games. โAnytime youโre 2-0 in this league, itโs a great thing,โ McDuffie said. โBut I still feel like thereโs a lot we need to clean upโtechnique-wise, flags, turnovers. On defense, creating turnovers is a big thing weโve got to do, but 2-0, no matter what, you want to get that win at the end of the day.โ
McDuffie also discussed hisย play as the teamโs top cornerback. โI think Iโm doing my job good,โ he admitted. โThereโs things Iโve got to clean up on the backendโcommunication, technique-wise. Iโm still getting comfortable out there and playing the role Coach [Steve] Spagnuolo wants me to play.โ Despite his humility, McDuffie has been stellar, leading all cornerbacks with 100 coverage snaps in two games, allowing only three catches for 26 yards.
McDuffie addressed the tight end coverage issues that have troubled the defense recently. โItโs partly how our defense has been playing these first two games and the calls weโve been given,โ McDuffie said. โWe trust all the linebackers, and weโre going to keep attacking these tight ends like we always do.โ He also praised his fellow cornerback, Jaylen Watson. โI love that man,โ McDuffie said. โHeโs one of those guys who just keeps getting better. Even when he doesnโt make the play, his confidence and technique grow as the game progresses.โ
Final Thoughts
The Kansas City Chiefs are deep into their preparations for Week 3โs Sunday Night Football matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Both teams coming off dramatic, walk-off victories in Week 2. With new personnel stepping in and injuries forcing changes, the Chiefs face a challenging task against a Falcons team finding its offensive rhythm.
Atlanta boasts a variety of weapons on both sides of the ball, which will certainly give the Chiefs problems, so Andy Reid and his staff have their work cut out for them as they adjust to the roster changes ahead of this key matchup.
