Chiefs’ Dominant Win Showcases Patrick Mahomes Extending NFL Record, Strengthening MVP Lead
Patrick Mahomes added another milestone to his already impressive résumé on Sunday, winning his 93rd career regular-season game and surpassing Peyton Manning for the most wins by a quarterback at age 30 or younger in NFL history. Mahomes now holds a 93-26 career record, a testament to his sustained excellence since entering the league.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback delivered another commanding performance in Week 7, throwing for 286 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-0 shutout victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Two of those touchdowns went to Rashee Rice, who returned to action for the first time since Week 4 of last season and hauled in seven catches for 42 yards.
Mahomes’ dominance was so complete that he spent the entire fourth quarter on the bench, watching his team cruise to victory. The Chiefs scored on their first five possessions and racked up 434 total yards against a Raiders defense that had no answers.
Mahomes Takes Command of MVP Race
The performance vaulted Mahomes to the clear favorite in the 2025 NFL MVP race, with his odds now sitting at +150 according to major sportsbooks. Through seven weeks, Mahomes has compiled 1,800 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions. He has also contributed 250 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns, showcasing the dual-threat ability that makes him so difficult to defend.
Over his last four games, Mahomes has been particularly lethal, throwing for 11 touchdowns and rushing for two more. The Chiefs remain undefeated, and if Mahomes continues at this pace, he could be on track for his third regular-season MVP award.
The Competition
While Mahomes leads the pack, several quarterbacks are making strong cases of their own.
Baker Mayfield sits at +320 and faces a crucial test in Week 8 against the Detroit Lions. A win that moves the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to 6-1 could significantly boost his MVP candidacy, especially given that he has never won the award before.
Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills remains in the conversation at +400, though his odds have lengthened slightly as Mahomes has surged ahead.
Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams has seen his MVP odds rise to +1000 after a five-touchdown performance in Week 7. Stafford leads the NFL with 17 passing touchdowns and has accumulated 1,866 passing yards with a 109.3 passer rating. Like Mayfield, Stafford has never won an MVP award, which could work in his favor if voters experience fatigue with Mahomes.
Perhaps the most surprising contender is Drake Maye of the New England Patriots, whose odds have skyrocketed from +2500 to +950. Maye has completed 75.2 percent of his passes for 1,744 yards, 12 touchdowns and just two interceptions while adding 200 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. His rapid ascent has made him one of the most intriguing storylines of the season.
The Path Forward
There is a reality Mahomes must contend with: voter fatigue. Similar to the hesitation some voters have shown toward Lamar Jackson in recent years, there may be reluctance to award Mahomes a third MVP when other deserving candidates like Mayfield, Stafford or Maye have never won the honor.
However, if Mahomes becomes undeniable, none of that will matter. With every passing week the Chiefs continue to make their case as the best team in football, and Mahomes continues to put up elite numbers while leading his team to victories. With 10 weeks remaining in the regular season, he has the runway to build an overwhelming case.
Sunday’s historic win over the Raiders was another step in that direction. At just 30 years old, Mahomes now owns the record for most regular-season wins at his age, and he shows no signs of slowing down. If he keeps playing at this level, his third MVP award could be a matter of when, not if.
