Chiefs Speak to Media, Emphasize Offensive Resurgence and Consistency Ahead of Raiders Game
The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for their Week 7 rivalry matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, and they’re getting a significant offensive weapon back just in time. Wide receiver Rashee Rice, who served a six-game suspension to start the season, is set to return to practice and play this Sunday.
Head coach Andy Reid confirmed Rice’s status on Wednesday, providing a much-needed boost for a team looking to find its rhythm.
“He’s going to play,” Reid said firmly. “How many snaps he’ll get, I don’t know… He’s been working hard. He’s in good shape.”
Rice’s return marks the first time quarterback Patrick Mahomes will have his full arsenal of receivers, including Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown, available in a regular-season game. The trio shared only a single snap together in the preseason before injuries and suspensions kept them apart. Now, with Rice rejoining the fold, the potential for an explosive, high-powered offense is palpable.
Mahomes expressed his excitement about what Rice’s presence means for the offense’s growth.
“It’s gonna force defenses to choose—are you gonna sit back and let us throw stuff underneath, or are you gonna come up and have to deal with all that speed running down the field?” Mahomes said. He believes the offense has been consistently improving and that Rice’s return will only help it “continue to grow.”
Consistency is Key as Chiefs Face Raiders
While the Chiefs’ offense is getting a boost, the team remains focused on the bigger picture: consistency. After a mixed start to the season, Mahomes acknowledged the team’s duality.
“We’ve shown that we can beat anybody, but we’ve also shown we can make mistakes and lose to anybody,” he said. Mahomes noted that Coach Reid has been preaching consistency as the key to unlocking their full potential.
The upcoming game against the Raiders is more than just another date on the calendar. It’s a rivalry steeped in history, and for the players, it carries extra weight.
“This game means more to everybody,” Mahomes said. “It’s a true rivalry game… I’m blessed to be a part of it because it truly brings out the best of both teams.”
Uncertainty Surrounding Josh Simmons
While there is clarity on Rice, the situation regarding offensive lineman Josh Simmons remains uncertain. Simmons missed the game against the Detroit Lions for personal reasons, and his status for Week 7 is still unknown.
Coach Reid was tight-lipped when asked about Simmons, stating that General Manager Brett Veach “is handling that” situation. Reid also declined to confirm whether Simmons would participate in practice.
Mahomes, however, offered a glimpse into the team’s support for their teammate. He confirmed he had spoken with Simmons but would keep their conversation private, adding simply, “I’m praying for him.”
Jaylon Moore Steps Up
With Simmons’ status in question, Jaylon Moore, who stepped in at left tackle, may be called upon again. Moore’s performance has earned him the confidence of his quarterback.
“I know the work that Jaylon has put in,” Mahomes said. “He’s done his job and done it well. Having the reps in training camp and OTAs, I know he’s going to go out there and battle. He’s a starting tackle in this league.”
Moore’s readiness provides a crucial layer of stability for an offensive line that will be tasked with protecting Mahomes against a fierce Raiders pass rush.
As the Chiefs head into this pivotal AFC West showdown, all eyes will be on how they integrate Rice back into the offense and navigate the uncertainties on their offensive line. For a team aiming for a deep playoff run, finding consistency against a bitter rival could be the spark that ignites their season.
