Chiefs Bring Back QB Bailey Zappe on 1-Year Deal
The Kansas City Chiefs remain active during free agency, this time reuniting with Bailey Zappe on a one-year deal per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media. The Chiefs make this signing a day following their signing of Gardner Minshew, continuing to add depth to their quarterback room behind Patrick Mahomes.
Zappe, 25, previously spent time with Kansas City in 2024 as a practice squad member before being signed by the Cleveland Browns. He started one game for Cleveland in Week 18, completing 16-of-31 passes for 170 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.
Bailey Zappe Returns to the ChiefsÂ
Zappe initially joined the Chiefs after being released by the New England Patriots. He served as Kansas City’s third-string quarterback for several weeks but did not appear in a game before signing with Cleveland.
The former fourth-round pick played in 15 career games, making nine starts between New England and Cleveland. He holds a 62.1% completion rate, totaling 2,223 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in his NFL career.
Bailey Zappe to Compete for a Roster Spot
With Minshew projected as Mahomes’ primary backup, Zappe will likely compete for the third-string spot. The Chiefs also still have Chris Oladokun on the roster, meaning Zappe’s spot is not guaranteed heading into training camp.
The Kansas City Chiefs in the Andy Reid era value quarterbacks who have many different skill sets and bring experience into their system. With Zappe’s familiarity with the team already, he could fit well as the Chiefs’ third-string emergency backup quarterback if the need ever arises.
Zappe’s Previous Success and Potential Fit
Zappe has reached this moment because of his previous track record which stems all the way back to his collegiate days. Where Zappe had a historic career when he attended Western Kentucky, setting an FBS record with 5,967 passing yards and 62 touchdowns back in 2021. His ability to be able to perform at such a level in an Air-Raid style offense shows he’s able to fit within Kansas City’s scheme.
Zappe’s success with helping to develop top talent including Malachi Corley who was drafted by the Jets. Along with his quick making and accuracy could make a valuable asset for the Chiefs to work with.
Final Thoughts
With Zappe returning to Kansas City, he gives them another capable option at the quarterback position behind Patrick Mahomes. Also, he will still have to compete for the third-string spot going into training camp. With his experience and familiarity with the team and their system, it give him a good shot to be able to secure the job.
Now, Kansas City has at least three NFL starting-caliber quarterbacks for the upcoming year. With Zappe being the latest addition, whichever role he ultimately plays will, at the very least, be beneficial to the team’s developmental purposes.
