Denver Broncos Hang On To Beat Washington Commanders 27-26 In Overtime
Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos were going for their ninth straight win of the season against the Washington Commanders. The defense shut down Marcus Mariota late in the game, and the Broncos held on to improve to 10-2 on the season. The tight race for the one seed continues, with the New England Patriots facing the New York Giants tomorrow night on Monday Night Football.
Broncos Come Alive Late
For the first time in their winning streak, the Broncos’ defense struggled throughout the game. The Commanders had a great game plan on offense: use the short passing game to their advantage and get the ball out quickly to avoid Denver’s wicked pass rush. Marcus Mariota’s interception early on in the second quarter was the deciding factor in this game and swung all the momentum in the Broncos’ favor.
They drove down the field late in the fourth quarter and converted on 3rd and 25, setting up a game-tying field goal. In overtime, the Broncos put together a stellar drive to give them a seven-point lead, with Evan Engram having his biggest game as a Bronco. He led the team in receiving with 79 yards on 6 catches.
On the final drive of the game, the Commanders were able to score on fourth and goal on a beautiful play design to Terry McLaurin. On the two-point conversion, Mariota had a touchdown, but Nik Bonitto chased him down and deflected his pass to give the Broncos a huge road win.
Bo Nix Made the Key Throws
It wasn’t pretty throughout, but Bo Nix made the big-time throws when it mattered the most. His touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton was amazing, as he stayed on his feet, made an off-balance throw, and hit his receiver in stride. Nix threw for over 300 yards and played the best football you could’ve possibly asked for on their final drive in overtime.
Coming off a bye after their win against the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver was able to prevail late and win their ninth straight game this season after starting 1-2. The defense wasn’t great, but they made the biggest plays when the pressure was on them. With Justin Herbert suffering an injury against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Broncos could have a great opportunity to truly run away with the Division.
The Broncos will meet their division rivals next week in Las Vegas, as they look to sweep them for the second straight season. If the Patriots lose to the Giants, the Broncos will hold the best record in all of football, which would be an outstanding accomplishment given how many people were and still are down on this team.
