New York Mets Have 2 Silver Slugger Award Finalists

The New York Mets have two Silver Slugger Award finalists.

Earlier today the finalists for the 2024 Silver Slugger Awards were announced by Major League Baseball. The New York Mets have two finalists for the prestigious award. First Baseman Pete Alonso and Shortstop Francisco Lindor were New York’s two finalists. Alonso is gunning for the first Silver Slugger Award while Lindor is looking to pick up his fourth. He also won last year at the shortstop position. The winners will be announced on November 11. How many Silver Sluggers will the New York Mets end up with?

New York Mets Led By Dynamic Duo

The New York Mets had a great season that saw them advance to the NLCS where they were bested by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lindor and Alonso’s performances were a major reason why the team was able to experience such success in 2024. Alonso was 12th in the regular season with 34 home runs while Lindor was 14th with 33. This duo was also top 30 in the league in RBI during the regular season.

Alonso and Lindor Face Stiff Competition

At the first base position, Alonso joins the Los Angeles Dodgers Freddie Freeman and Philadelphia’s Bryce Harper as the finalists. Alonso and Freeman have gone head-to-head for the award in years past and the New York Mets first baseman hopes that 2024 will be his year to win. Alonso led all National League first basemen in home runs but trails Freeman and Harper in key categories like OBP, Slugging Percentage, and OPS. Freeman is poised to take home his fourth Silver Slugger Award next week.

At the shortstop position, Lindor joins Milwaukee’s Willy Adames and Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz. Lindor has an easier path to the award than his teammate Alonso. Lindor trails LA’s Mookie Betts in a few categories, but Betts only played 18 games at the position in 2024. Of the three finalists, Lindor leads in batting average, OBP, home runs, Slugging Percentage, OPS, hits, and more. Lindor did have 21 fewer RBI than Adames in 2024, and De La Cruz led the league in stolen bases in the regular season.

Final Thoughts

The New York Mets saw their strong 2024 regular season followed up with two Silver Slugger Award finalists. Unfortunately for Alonso, it does not look like this will be the year when he will win the award. Lindor, on the other hand, is the prohibitive favorite to win the award next week. Alonso has a much bigger decision to weigh this offseason though. He will be a free agent and have a bidding war for his services.

At 29 years old, Alonso will look to cash in off a great season and sign a long-term deal with a club. Alonso has reiterated how much he has enjoyed his tenure with the New York Mets and how he would like to remain with the team for the remainder of his career. As is the case with most contract negotiations, the player will go to the highest bidder. New York Mets Owner Steve Cohen has not been frugal in the past when signing free agents, but only time will tell if Alonso will be with the New York Mets in 2025 and beyond.
