Milwaukee Bucks: Exec Suggests Team Tank Amid Giannis Antetokounmpo Locker Room Tension
The Milwaukee Bucks are facing mounting challenges both on and off the court, with an Eastern Conference executive suggesting the team should consider tanking the season. This comes as tension within the Bucks’ locker room reportedly reaches an all-time high, fueled by the team’s struggles and uncertainty surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future.
The Case for Tanking for the Milwaukee Bucks
According to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, an Eastern Conference executive believes the Bucks should embrace a rebuild by tanking the remainder of the season. “The Bucks should be tanking this season. That would let them start off their rebuild with a high pick in a deep draft,” the executive said.
Currently sitting at 18-25 and 11th in the Eastern Conference, the Bucks are 1.5 games out of a play-in spot. If the season ended today, Milwaukee would hold the No. 8 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. However, the team’s lack of tradable assets and recent blowout losses have cast doubt on their ability to turn things around.
Locker Room Tension at an All-Time High
Adding to the turmoil, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that tension within the Bucks’ locker room is at unprecedented levels. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Charania described a “splintering environment” within the organization, driven by Antetokounmpo’s frustration with the team’s performance and uncertainty about his future.
“The frustration that Giannis Antetokounmpo has is at an all-time high,” Charania said. “He’s frustrated with the losing. He’s frustrated with the situation. … There’s this somewhat of a splintering environment that we’re seeing going on there.”
Antetokounmpo, who has missed 14 games this season due to injury, recently called out his teammates for “selfish” play and acknowledged the team’s lack of chemistry. When asked about his confidence in finishing the season in Milwaukee, he responded, “I don’t know. I take it day by day.”
The Bucks’ Dilemma
Despite the calls for tanking, the Bucks’ front office appears more focused on adding talent to support Antetokounmpo rather than initiating a rebuild. Bontemps and Brian Windhorst reported that Milwaukee is actively exploring trade options to bolster their roster, though their limited assets—just one tradable first-round pick in 2031 or 2032—pose a significant challenge.
The team’s recent struggles, including four losses in their last five games by an average margin of 23.7 points, have only intensified the pressure on general manager Jon Horst to make a decisive move before the February 5 trade deadline.
Giannis’ Future in Question
Antetokounmpo’s future with the Bucks has been a topic of speculation for months. Last summer, he reportedly expressed concerns about the team’s roster and indicated that the New York Knicks were the only other team he would consider playing for. While he has remained loyal to Milwaukee throughout his 13-year career, Charania noted that “the writing is on the wall” regarding a potential split.
“Everything about Giannis’ brand has been loyalty,” Charania said. “But what I’ve been hearing over and over for months now is that the writing is on the wall for Giannis and the Bucks. It’s just, how do they get there? When do they get there?”
What’s Next for the Bucks?
The Bucks face a critical stretch leading up to the trade deadline, with seven games that could determine the team’s direction. Whether they choose to tank, make a bold trade, or stay the course, the decisions made in the coming weeks will have far-reaching implications for the franchise’s future.
For now, the Bucks must navigate a delicate balance between addressing locker room tension, managing Antetokounmpo’s frustrations, and charting a path forward in a season that has quickly unraveled.
