Is Luka Doncic Or Cooper Flagg the Better Player?
Is Luka Doncic or Cooper Flagg the better player at the moment? Read on for further insight regarding the Los Angeles Lakers star and the Dallas Mavericks rookie, so you can make an informed decision.
Is Luka Doncic Or Cooper Flagg the Better Player?
Doncic, 26, and Flagg, 19, may not appear to be a fair comparison on paper, given the very different stages of the two players’ careers. However, the two players share something in common, despite not being from the same continent, culture, or upbringing.
That thing is the two players being linked without their de facto consent and forcing them to relate to each other until one player retires from the league. Flagg will forever be Doncic’s replacement. He is the new face of the franchise, intended to take over and create his own era in the Mavs’ history and narrative.
Flagg’s takeover of Dallas, Texas, is far from the smooth and respectful passing of the torch from Mavs legend Dirk Nowitzki to Doncic in 2019. One can’t go back in time, but the unplanned passing of the torch to Flagg feels like a bad breakup where one party disagreed with the separation, terms have never been discussed, and the children were involved.
Both Flagg and Doncic entered the league as barely adults. Both players began beating records right away, coming in with intense pressure that eventually led to consistent play at a high level in their respective rookie years, and possessing high basketball IQs. Such traits are rare for professional athletes, as they are often reserved for future generational superstars.
Luka Doncic’s Outlook
Doncic’s outlook in Los Angeles, California, is bright. Doncic can certainly lead his own era in Los Angeles after LeBron James retires. The 26-year-old is just starting his peak as opposed to his 19-year-old replacement, who is just getting started. The 26-year-old’s other comparisons include Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe.
However, the Slovenian big man is a top five player, ranking as No. 3 in the NBA’s Top 10 Player Rankings, and widely considered a future Hall of Fame player. The Slovenian big man’s early career success has led to excellence.
Cooper Flagg’s Outlook
Flagg’s outlook is bright in a different way. Flagg can be compared to Doncic, but it is unfair to compare the two players. The former fell into Dallas as a highly decorated player from Duke and had nothing to do with the trade.
It is also unfair to compare a rookie and a superstar solely by what happened compared to what they did, who they are, etc. As a result, one would miss the overall point.
Doncic On Flagg
Despite any hard feelings, Doncic praised Flagg after the two players’ NBA Cup game at Crypto.com Arena on Nov. 28, 2025. The 6-foot-8 guard said, “I think he is a good player … Obviously, there is a lot of pressure that comes with the first pick, so he has a lot on his shoulders. I think he will be a great player.”
The debate on the two players will likely continue. Both players have their own strengths. Flagg’s future development will likely shape the public’s comparisons. But the selection between Doncic or Flagg might come down to how they fit their teams’ future strategies.
