Detroit Tigers Ace Tarik Skubal Wins Second Straight CY Young Award
Another year and yet another spectacular season from Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. He just clinched his second straight Cy Young in a dominant 2025 campaign. Skubal narrowly edged out Boston Red Sox star Garrett Crochet and Houston Astros right-hander Hunter Brown for the coveted award.
Skubal Makes History With CY Young Victory
With Skubal clinching his second straight Cy Young, the Tigers’ lefty joined some exclusive company while also making some history along the way. Skubal became the first pitcher to win back-to-back Cy Young Awards since Jacob deGrom did so back in both 2018 and 2019. Skubal also became the first American League pitcher to win two straight Cy Young Awards since Red Sox legend Pedro Martinez accomplished that feat in 1999 and 2000.
Skubal’s Numbers Made His Win An Easy Decision
If you thought Skubal’s 2024 Cy Young season was dominant statistically speaking, then feast your eyes upon this year’s numbers for the Tigers star. In over 195 innings pitched this past season, Skubal finished with a 13-6 record with a 2.21 ERA to go along with 241 strikeouts. The fast-throwing south paw also showed his penchant to shut offenses down completely. He set a Tigers franchise record with 12 scoreless starts with at least six innings pitched in 2025.
Skubal’s Impending Free Agency
While his second straight Cy Young will certainly be something to cherish, Skubal’s potential payday could be even sweeter. The soon-to-be 29-year-old will have plenty of teams backing up the brink trucks to acquire the now two-time Cy Young winner’s services after the 2026 season.
Rumors have swirled around a potential trade next season, with Detroit stating publicly that they are willing to listen to trade suitors, but only if they get a massive return for Skubal. Regardless, wherever Skubal ends up, he can expect to see a lot of money in his bank account in the near future.
