Nick Martinez, Junior Caminero Help Tampa Bay Rays Down Cincinnati Reds To Snap 3-Game Slide

Tampa Bay Rays infielder Jonathan Aranda (8) runs home.

The Tampa Bay Rays were able to salvage the series against the Cincinnati Reds after a comfortable 6-1 victory in Tropicana Field. Starting Pitcher Nick Martinez was fantastic yet again, going eight strong innings to notch his first win of the season. Meanwhile, Third Baseman Junior Caminero added to his home run total to six on the year. The dub puts an end to a three-game losing streak and a loss in four of Tampa’s previous five games.

Before their recent slide, the Rays were riding high. They were boasting a six-game winning streak, which included taking three straight from division rival, the New York Yankees. The good times quickly evaporated for Tampa with pitching being the primary culprit for its struggles. In the previous five games, Tampa Bay had a team ERA of 6.51, in contrast to a 3.27 earned run average while winning six consecutive games. Consistent pitching will be paramount in the coming weeks.

Nick Martinez Has Been Dependable For the Rays

Martinez pitched like an ace against the Reds. It so happens that Martinez previously called Cincinnati home for the last two seasons before moving his talents to Florida. It is safe to assume that the 35-year-old righty wanted to show the Reds what they are missing. And, yes, he did exactly that.

Martinez lowered his ERA to a sparkling 2.10 after posting season highs in innings in a start (8) and strikeouts (6). Furthermore, he only allowed a total of six baserunners, five hits, and one walk issued. Of the five hits, one went for extra bases. The Reds’ star Shortstop Elly De La Cruz, was held to 0-of-4 with two strikeouts after going 4-10 (.400 BA), 2 homers, and 6 RBI in the first two games of the three-game set.

The Rays will need Martinez to continue his strong start to 2026. His fellow starting pitchers have had their woes in recent games and have not shown the same consistency as Martinez. Steven Matz? Three innings, four earned runs on Tuesday. Jesse Scholtens? 5.2 innings, 5 earned runs on Monday. Shane McClanahan? Try 4.1 innings of four-earned-run ball. No doubt about it, the pitching needs to pick it up for the Rays to contend in the AL East.

Caminero, Yandy Díaz Shine On Offense

Caminero provided the boom for the Rays’ offense in the team’s six-run output. The third baseman led the team with a couple of runs batted in, one of which was driven in the third inning. With Tampa already up 3-0, Caminero came to bat to lead off. After seeing two changeups, one low and out of the strike zone and the other fouled off, Caminero took a 1-1 sinker that didn’t sink over 400 feet to right center field.

The 22-year-old is riding an eight-game hitting streak and has four of his team-leading six dingers in this stretch. Speaking of Tampa batters who are hitting the ball well, Designated Hitter Yandy Díaz went 3-for-4 with a ribbie and a run scored to balloon his overall batting average to .340. That average is good for the top five in all of baseball. His 32 hits lead the Rays, while only Jonathan Aranda (19) has more RBI than Díaz’s 18.
