Luke Weaver Provides Thoughts on 2026 New York Mets Struggles
The New York Mets have not been able to get off to the start they were hoping for this season. They are sitting 11.5 games back in the National League East with a 10-21 record, which is the worst record in all of Major League Baseball. While it is still early, it is evident that there is a lot of weight on the team and its players. Let’s take a closer look at what one player said regarding the disappointing start to 2026.
Luke Weaver discusses the 2026 New York Mets terrible start

Following the 5-4 home loss to the Washington Nationals on Thursday, New York Mets reliever Luke Weaver opened up regarding the team’s struggles this season.
“I’ve been sitting here trying to think about what to even say to you guys and what you’re even going to ask. At the end of the day, this pursuit of perfection is an ultimate pressurized failure mindset. Everyone wants to be the hero because we care and we want to win really, really bad. I just don’t think success lives in that realm. It truly doesn’t. The freedom with which we play day-to-day is kind of being suffocated a little bit.
“I want to do my job, it’s that simple – there’s moments that feel really close, and then there’s mistakes that magnify our situation. I sit there and feel the weight of the world, like I let the team down… We sit there and we’ll tell you guys, ‘It’ll come. This is the game. This is the law of averagees.’ But those words just don’t hold the same weight when you continue to [lose] day after day. The encouragement and motivation to pursue being the best person and best baseball player you can be is the only answer. Until we prove that, I understand the grievances from the outsiders.”
The New York Mets have been struggling to get much of anything going in terms of wins, losing six of their nine games this homestand. Weaver has struggled himself in his first season with the Mets, as he has pitched in 12 games and is 2-1 with a 6.00 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 12.0 innings. Weaver signed a two-year, $22 million contract this offseason with the New York Mets after being the closer for the New York Yankees for the majority of his time in the Bronx. It will be interesting to see how Weaver and the Mets look going forward.
