Hot Temperatures In St. Louis As New York Yankees Try To Sweep 3-Game Series
Hot temperatures were the name of the game as the Yankees took on the Cardinals and tried to sweep a three-game series. Will Warren started for the Yankees. He has pitched well and faced Miles Mikolas, who has not pitched well. The pitchers nearly melted in the hot temperatures. This game featured a good deal of scoring again. The Yankees are off tomorrow and now need to win almost every game from here on out if they are to make the playoffs. If the Yankees do make the playoffs, who do you think should start game one?
Lineups: Hot Temperatures In St. LouisÂ
The St. Louis Cardinals had Lars Nootbaar leading off and as the left fielder. In the eighth inning, Garrett Hampson came in for a cramping Nootbaar. The weather was too much for Notbaar. Masyn Winn was playing shortstop and batted second. Alec Burleson batted third and was the first baseman.
Ivan Herrera batted fourth and was the designated hitter. Nolan Gorman was the third baseman and batted fifth. Jordan Walker was the right fielder and batted sixth. Yohel Pozo was the catcher and batted seventh. Thomas Saggese was the second baseman and batted eighth. Nathan Church was the center fielder and batted ninth.Â
For the Yankees, Trent Grisham played center field and led off. Ben Rice was the catcher and batted second. Giancarlo Stanton pinch-hit for him in the ninth inning. Then, Anthony Volpe ran for him and stayed in to play shortstop. Aaron Judge was the designated hitter and batted third. Cody Bellinger was the right fielder and batted fourth. He switched to left field in the ninth inning.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. was the second baseman and batted fifth. Paul Goldschmidt was the first baseman and batted sixth. Jasson Dominguez was the left fielder and batted seventh. Austin Wells took his spot in the batting order and played catcher in the ninth inning. Ryan McMahon was the third baseman and batted eighth. Jose Caballero was the shortstop and batted ninth. He moved to right field in the ninth inning.
News and Notes
By far, the weather was the biggest story of the game. It was so hot that the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory. The hot temperatures affected the game. Rice’s offensive outburst with 7 RBI last night was special, but not anything new. He had done that before.
Game Reaction
Stanton again was not in the starting lineup for the Yankees today. He is nursing another injury. That is a shame, as he has been the most dangerous hitter in the Yankees’ batting order. However, Bellinger was back from his illness. This game was like the other two. The Yankees built a lead, and the Cardinals came back. Then, the two teams went back and forth.
Goldschmidt started for the first time in this series. He played in St. Louis for six seasons before joining the Yankees this season. He got a nice hand before his first at-bat. In this game, errors led to opponent runs. This is a sad and repeated theme for the Yankees. Chisholm Jr. stole two bases in this game. He is now a 20-20 player.
Scoring Summary
In the fourth inning, New York scored three runs, and the Cardinals scored two. Dominguez singled, and Goldschmidt scored. Then, McMahon singled and Goldschmidt scored. Finally, Caballero singled and McMahon scored. It was 3-0 Yankees, but that lead was short-lived.
In the bottom half of the fourth inning, Saggese doubled, and Herrera and Walker both scored. It was now 3-2 Yankees. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Burleson singled and Nootbaar scored. That tied the game at 3.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Pozo homered. St. Louis led 4-3. In the seventh inning, Bellinger hit a sacrifice fly and Grisham scored. That tied the game at 4. In the ninth inning, Bellinger reached on an error with the bases loaded, and both Caballero and Volpe scored. Then Chisholm Jr. grounded out and Judge scored. The Yankees led 7-4. Then, Goldschmidt doubled and Chisolm Jr. scored. That made it 8-4 New York.
Conclusion
This game was played in very hot temperatures. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory. With it being players’ weekend, viewers saw pencil bats, ice cream bats, giraffe bats, and Pozo (in this game) had the handprints of the kids at the local children’s hospital on his bat.
This was a big victory for New York as most of their competition in the playoff race lost. They are now three games up on Cleveland for the third wild card and are only half a game behind Boston for the second wild card. The Yankees are off tomorrow. They travel to Tampa, where it will also be hot.
