Michigan Wolverines Basketball Lands Elite 3-Star Recruit For 2024

Michigan Wolverines

The Michigan Wolverines have been hot on the recruiting trail in the last week. Head Coach Dusty May has gained some traction for the upcoming season at Michigan. With the departure of Juwan Howard several weeks ago, the Michigan Wolverines basketball program has been looking to reload its roster. They have already had a significant number of signees join the team.

Michigan is coming off of one of the worst seasons in its basketball history. In 2023, the team had a record of 8-24. This was a major downfall with Howard at the helm.

Now with May taking over, a culture shift is needed to bring the program back to its winning formula. This morning, Michigan was able to snag a former FAU recruit in Lorenzo Cason. He has flipped his commitment after Dusty May became the head coach for the Michigan Wolverines.

Lorenzo Cason Flips Commitment To Michigan

Lorenzo Cason originally committed to Florida Atlantic before May left the school. The three-star combo guard will be a part of the 2024 recruiting class coming in as a freshman. In his sophomore and junior seasons in high school, Cason kept the same average in points scored with 27.6. His assists total and rebound numbers went up as a varsity player with 5.8 assists and eight boards.

It was not a shock that Lorenzo Cason would commit to a Florida-based university since he attended high school in the same state. He recognized Dusty May as being the reason why he flipped to the Michigan Wolverines. He stated,

“I chose Michigan because of Dusty,” Cason told On3. “It’s hard not to want to play for a coach who believes in you. He took me with him from FAU and I think that’s says enough as it is. The staff is amazing, but I know the culture is going to be even better. As well as the style of play, just getting up and down the court in transition is a huge differentiator.”

As a senior at Victory Christian Academy, Cason scored 24.5 points per game with 7.2 boards and 6.4 assists. He will be another key piece for Michigan as they enter the 2024 season. In the meantime, the Wolverines have received other commitments and transfers.

Over the last several days, Michigan has been red hot in the transfer portal. Tre Donaldson is heading to Ann Arbor from Auburn to play at the guard position. Donaldson averaged 6.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 10 games in his last season with the Tigers. Former Yale center Danny Wolf has also transferred to Michigan. He averaged 14.1 points, 9.7 boards, and 2.2 assists in 2023.

Wolf will be a big contributor for the Michigan Wolverines as an inside presence on the defensive end. Other players include Justin Pippen who will join Cason in the 2024 recruiting class. He is the son of six-time NBA Champion, Scottie Pippen.

The future is looking bright for the Michigan Wolverines basketball team. It is apparent that many players want to win and to be part of a winning program. Fans were disappointed with the result of only eight wins in 2023.  May will approach the game with a different style on offense as he will want to shoot more from the perimeter.

It may take some time to revamp or reload the team, but the Michigan Wolverines look to be in good hands as the new basketball season is near. May still has a few more months before his squad will hit the court in the fall of this year in Ann Arbor.
