The Los Angeles Lakers recently fired coach Darvin Ham and the rest of the staff this offseason. Now, rumors have been floating around about who would take up the helm of this winning franchise and bring it back to its former glory. One name that has made its way to the forefront is former Lakers guard Rajon Rondo. It is believed that he could be a possible addition to the staff that the next head coach will build.
This Lakers team is in desperate need of a rebuild. Could adding this star as a coach help them grow?
Los Angeles Lakers Massive Coaching Rebuild

Four days after the Los Angeles Lakers lost in the first round against the Denver Nuggets with a 4-1 gentleman’s sweep, the Lakers fired their head coach, Darvin Ham. Ham was only the LA leader for two seasons. Both of these seasons were a bit rocky, with his first record being 43-39, and they were swept in the Western Conference Finals by the Nuggets. This season their record was 47-35. These records and playoff runs aren’t that bad, but it was clear that Ham had zero control of the team and looked a bit lost on the sideline in some crucial moments.
Along with the firing of Ham, the Lakers tossed out the whole coaching staff in hopes of starting fresh. Clearly, they want to give their next head coach the chance to build his own team of guys to get the Lakers moving. Rajon Rondo is one of the names being mentioned quite a bit.

Rajon Rondo’s History With the Lakers

For the first nine years of his career, Rajon Rondo was a part of the bitter Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers rivalry. However, he’d be fighting for the side that bleeds green and not the purple and gold. It wasn’t until his 14th season in the league that he would make his debut for his once rival team. Here, he’d win a ring with LeBron James in 2020.
That season, Rondo was a bench presence for the team, averaging 7.1 points per game, 5.0 assists per game, and 3.0 rebounds. After this, he headed over to the Atlanta Hawks for a season and then the LA Clippers. However, he’d have one more stint with the Lakers in the 2021-22 season. It’s clear that he has a deep history with the team due to his time with the Celtics and his three seasons with the Lakers. This connection alone could give him a decent chance at landing a coaching job with them.

Would This Be a Good Move for the Lakers?

Right now, JJ Redick is clearly the favorite for taking the head coaching job with the Lakers. We won’t know if this is the right move to make until the next season begins and we get to see Redick in action. However, with him the definite favorite, people have started to look deeper into who could be a good fit for his staff.
Rajon Rondo and Redick have a few things in common. For one, they would both be players trying their luck at coaching. They also both spent time with the Dallas Mavericks, Clippers, and New Orleans Pelicans. Perhaps, these two could work well together thanks to these similarities. There are plenty of successful coaches who once played in the league, but the Los Angeles Lakers are in desperate need of a leader. Can these two handle the job?
