Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker was the commencement speaker at Benedictine College over the weekend. It is not uncommon for a famous athlete or celebrity to be asked to speak to the graduating class. Butker has gotten a lot of recognition in the past few years as the Chiefs have been in many high-profile games. However, the speech he gave has ruffled some feathers. He went on a political tirade during the speech, criticizing many federal leaders and their policies.
Kansas City Chiefs Harrison Butker Goes On Epic Rant
The Kansas City Chiefs kicker gave a 20-minute speech to the graduating class of Benedictine College. This is a small Catholic liberal arts school in Atchison, Kansas. In the speech, he blasted the policies of president Joe Biden especially coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“While COVID might have played a large role throughout your formative years, it is not unique,” he said. “The bad policies and poor leadership have negatively impacted major life issues. Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for the degenerate cultural values and media all stem from pervasiveness of disorder.”
It didn’t stop there. Harrison Butker then attacked “dangerous gender ideologies” and gave a long soliloquy on the importance of women staying in the home.
“I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”
Backlash Over Speech
Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has gotten a lot of backlash from the speech he gave. Many people have denounced his opinions and argued they are more hurtful than helpful. Unfortunately, in this day and age, a politically charged speech like this one is going to turn some heads.
Will this have any effect on the Kansas City Chiefs during the season? Most likely, no. While players and coaches will likely be asked about it, the PR department will coach players to give the “correct” answer. It may bother some people in the locker room, but his teammates probably already knew his views on the world. Harrison Butker may seem some short term backlash but by the time the season starts, this will be old news.
