Earlier in the month of March, Saquon Barkley made a splash in the headlines when news broke that he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. During the earlier stages of free agency, meanwhile, the Houston Texans were seriously trying to acquire the running back. Barkley was interested in joining the Houston Texans as well. However, the Eagles made the best offer, which entailed a three-year deal for $37.75 million.
The Inside Scoop: Saquon Barkley
The New Heights podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce recently hosted Saquon Barkley. Additionally, Barkley mentioned that the Philadelphia Eagles were not the first team he considered. Additionally, he explored other options before making his decision. Barkley said to the brothers:
“I’m gonna be honest here, that’s what the show is for. Probably the team that had my first interest was Houston.” the running back said. “I got to communicate with C.J. and a couple of those boys. But this was before you could actually put offers on the table and talk to teams.”
Moreover, the ex-New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley was a really hot commodity at the start of free agency. Barkley said that four good teams including the Houston Texans, made him offers. Unfortunately for Giants fans, the Giants were not a part of the list of teams looking to acquire Barkley. But for him, however, he ultimately wanted to go where he knew would be the best fit for him. Going to the Philadelphia Eagles was the opportunity that made the most sense.
Huge Loss for The Houston Texans
The Houston Texans were hoping to achieve an upgrade in the running back department this offseason. The Texans then thought that adding Saquon Barkley could help their running and passing game. Yet, on the first day of the NFL’s legal tampering period, all the top running backs came and went. Without Barkley, the Houston Texans will more than likely have to lean on Dameon Pierce. They ended up acquiring running back Joe Mixon in a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Texans signed Mixon to an extension worth $27 million through the 2026 season.
