Houston Texans

The Houston Texans and Cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. agreed to a historic contract extension Monday morning. Stingley Jr. and the team agreed on a three-year $90 million extension with $89 million guaranteed. His $30 million base salary per season makes him the high-paid defensive back in NFL history.

Stingley Jr. is coming off the best season of his career in 2024. He was named a First-Team All-Pro. He had 54 tackles and 5 interceptions. He was also second in the league in Passes Defended. Stingley Jr. was the No. 22 cornerback in coverage last season according to PFF. Will the All-Pro cornerback continue being a contributor to the Houston Texans?

The Texans entered this offseason looking to build on another loss in the AFC Divisional Round. Stingley Jr. was one of many moves Houston made this offseason to solidify its defense. They re-signed Defensive End Derek Barnett and Defensive Tackle Mario Edwards Jr. The team also acquired Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and signed Defensive Tackle Sheldon Rankins.

Houston also made moves to improve on offense but traded away their best offensive lineman. Laremy Tunsil was traded to the Washington Commanders earlier this offseason. The Houston Texans followed that move by signing Wide Receiver Braxton Berrios and acquiring Wide Receiver Christian Kirk from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Final Thoughts
