The Houston Rockets took a huge leap last season. Ime Udoka came in a whipped the young team into shape. The combination of young talent and savvy veteran signings led to winning, especially late in the season. When the team got the number three overall pick, many wondered whether they would try to trade for a superstar. Today, even the rumor mill was swirling around the Rockets, potentially trading the pick for Kevin Durant. However, the team decided to make the pick and took Kentucky Wildcats guard Reed Sheppard.
Houston Rockets Pick Kentucky Guard Reed Sheppard
The Houston Rockets get one of the best shooters in the draft. Jay Bilas said Reed Sheppard is “the best shooter in this NBA Draft.” He shot over 50 percent from three this season and will fit in nicely with the rest of the young core. Any team can use shooting, and he fits in well next to Fred Van Vleet and Dillon Brooks. The Rockets want to win now and make the playoffs next season.
Reed Sheppard is the perfect fit for an Ime Udoka team. More than likely, Sheppard will come off the bench as the team is currently constructed. However, if the team does make a move, Sheppard could easily be a starter in today’s NBA. Even though the Houston Rockets made the pick, it doesn’t mean that he couldn’t be included in a future deal.
Can They Make The Playoffs?
The West is loaded, but it seems like the Houston Rockets are in a perfect position to make another leap next season. Ime Udoka has shown he can lead a team to an NBA Finals, and while the Rockets won’t be there next season, a playoff appearance should be possible. After the firesale from the James Harden era, the team is finally looking like a contender once again.
Reed Sheppard is a perfect pick for the Rockets. While some think they may swing for the fences, the current construction of the team could make some noise in the West in 2024.
