Scottie Scheffler Heads Into Final Round Of The Open Championship With 4-Shot Lead
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler looked the part today at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. He shot a bogey-free 67 to take a four-shot lead entering the final round of The Open Championship. He plodded around the golf course like the champion he is while he waited for those around him to slip up. That recipe worked to perfection as his consistent play forced his competitors into mistakes. Will he be able to finish the job on Sunday?
What Is On the Line For Scheffler In the Final Round?
Scheffler is looking down the barrel of history tomorrow in Northern Ireland. A win on Sunday would give the star golfer his fourth career major championship. He has won the Masters twice(2022, 2024) and the PGA Championship earlier this year. A win at The Open would get Scheffler 75% of the way to the Career Grand Slam. He would only need a win at the U.S. Open to become the seventh player to accomplish this feat. Before that comes into the equation, he has to win tomorrow.
It should also send shivers down the spines of his fellow golfers that the World No. 1 has finished the deal each of the last nine times he has held the 54-hole lead. That statistic rivals what Tiger Woods was capable of during his prime. He would not cough up leads on Sunday when he was at his best.
Final Thoughts
Even though Scheffler leads comfortably heading into Sunday, and has been automatic when holding a lead, it will be difficult for him tomorrow at Royal Portrush. He will have to contend with many hard-pressing chasers, including local hero Rory McIlroy. The Irishman electrified the crowds on Saturday as the galleries to watch him parade down the fairways were a sight to behold. Scheffler is 18 holes away from adding to an already historic resume. We will know in 24 hours if he is up to the task.
