Dallas Cowboys Trey Lance Has Done “Nothing But Excite Us” Claims Front Office Executive

Dallas Cowboys Trey Lance

The Dallas Cowboys traded for quarterback Trey Lance last offseason. Lance was supposed to be the next franchise quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers but could never make it on the field due to injuries and poor play. The Cowboys were happy to take a chance on the former third overall pick, and he spent last season out of the spotlight as Dak Prescott was the clear and obvious starter. In a recent interview, executive vice president Stephen Jones talked about how excited he was about Lance’s progress.

The Dallas Cowboys front office member went on 105.3 The Fan and talked about how Trey Lance has made a strong impression on the front office.

“He’s done nothing but excite us even more as he’s worked here all of last season and in the offseason, in terms of his work ethic, his skill level. We’re very pleased.”

The environment has been great to learn in. While it is easy to poke fun at the Cowboys, they have had one of the top offenses in the league over the past few years. One of the issues Lance had in San Francisco was he was the focal point of all quarterback discussions. Last season, some people barely remembered he was in Dallas, which likely helped his development.

Cowboys Succession Plan?

The Dallas Cowboys haven’t extended Dak Prescott. Many are calling for the Cowboys to move on, especially if this year ends the same way as previous seasons. However, the team shouldn’t move on unless they have a succession plan. Trey Lance could be that plan. If he can spend another season on the sidelines learning the offense and preparing, he could be in great shape to start in 2025.

What the Cowboys do with Lance will likely depend on how this season goes. If Prescott can lead the team deep into the playoffs, he will likely be extended. If the team fails to win a playoff game again, the franchise could turn to Lance and hope he is the one to break the drought in the playoffs.
