Michigan football just scored a major victory on the recruiting trail. The Wolverines successfully flipped four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati away from the Illinois Fighting Illini. Securing a top-tier signal-caller early in the cycle is a massive win for any college program, especially when you steal him from a Big Ten rival.

Recruiting battles are rarely simple, and Kamden Lopati’s journey is no exception. The talented quarterback originally committed to Illinois back in July. However, Michigan refused to back down. After former Michigan quarterback commit Peter Bourque reopened his recruitment, the Wolverines immediately zeroed in on Lopati as a top priority.

The coaching staff finally got the Salt Lake City native to campus for a multi-day visit earlier this month. That trip changed everything. Lopati built a tremendous bond with the coaching staff, specifically connecting with Koy Detmer Jr. and Jason Beck.

Lopati appreciated Detmer’s intense, demanding coaching style on the practice field, which contrasted perfectly with his calm demeanor off the field. Meanwhile, he viewed Beck as a relatable, family-oriented mentor. These genuine relationships convinced Lopati to change his allegiance. He ultimately chose the Wolverines over a massive list of elite offers that included Georgia, Oregon, Florida, and Notre Dame.

Breaking Down Kamden Lopati’s Skill Set

Standing at a solid 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 215 pounds, Lopati possesses the exact frame college scouts look for in a modern Power Four quarterback. The Under Armour and Army All-American from West High School in Utah is far more than just a traditional pocket passer.

Over the past two high school seasons, he threw for over 5,600 yards and racked up nearly 60 passing touchdowns. He boasts serious arm strength, easily driving deep outs and post routes on a rope. But what makes Lopati truly special is his underrated athleticism.

He recently slimmed down his frame to improve his mobility, and the results show on tape. Last season, he rushed for 730 yards and 10 touchdowns. He moves incredibly well inside the pocket, easily eluding the pass rush before throwing accurately on the run. He forces opposing defenses to respect the zone read, making him a true dual-threat nightmare. Recruiting analysts already praise his processing speed and believe he has a legitimate NFL ceiling.

What This Means for Michigan’s 2027 Class

Landing a franchise quarterback is the foundational piece of any great recruiting class. Ranked as the No. 10 quarterback in the nation and the No. 115 overall prospect in the Rivals300, Lopati gives Michigan a highly-touted leader to build around.

The Wolverines now hold five strong commitments for the 2027 cycle. Lopati joins a talented, growing group that includes edge rusher Recarder Kitchen, defensive backs Darrell Mattison and Maxwell Miles, and offensive lineman Louis Esposito.

Having a committed quarterback changes the entire dynamic of a recruiting class. Lopati can now step into the role of a peer recruiter, helping the coaching staff convince elite wide receivers and tight ends to join him in Ann Arbor.

Pulling a high-profile recruit away from Illinois proves that Michigan remains a dominant force on the national recruiting trail. Fans have every reason to be excited as they watch Kamden Lopati develop his game over the next couple of years before he officially arrives at the Big House.
