Alabama Loses Former No. 1 RB Recruit To The Transfer Portal
The Alabama Crimson Tide backfield is set to lose a former blue-chip prospect, as running back Richard Young has announced his plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. The decision comes after three seasons in Tuscaloosa where the highly-touted recruit struggled to find a consistent role in a crowded running back room.
A Buried Blue-Chip Recruit On Alabama’s Roster
Young arrived at Alabama as a celebrated member of the 2023 recruiting class. A four-star recruit out of Lehigh Acres, Florida, he was ranked as the No. 63 overall prospect and the No. 4 running back in his cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Expectations were high for the dynamic rusher, but he saw very limited action during his tenure with the Crimson Tide.
After redshirting as a true freshman in 2023, Young appeared in six games as a reserve in 2024. During that season, he carried the ball 25 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns. However, his role diminished further during his junior year in 2025. Playing as the team’s fourth-string back, he appeared in only three games, rushing for 48 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, averaging just 2.5 yards per attempt.
Looking for a New Opportunity
With his path to playing time at Alabama blocked, Young will seek a new program where he can showcase the talent that made him one of the nation’s top high school prospects. Having redshirted his first year, he is expected to have two seasons of eligibility remaining at his next destination.
As of his announcement, Young has not released a formal statement or social media message detailing his decision. His entry into the portal represents an opportunity for other programs to land a talented running back with a strong pedigree who is looking for a chance to finally emerge as a featured player. The official NCAA transfer portal window is scheduled to open on January 2.
