The Cleveland Browns are coming off one of the weirdest seasons in recent memory. After losing many of their starters to season-ending injuries, including their quarterback, the team defied the odds and went 11-6. One of the big reasons for their success was the play of wide receiver Amari Cooper. He was absent from the team’s mandatory minicamp and, in a recent interview, talked about how he is fighting for a new contract in 2024.
Cleveland Browns WR Amari Cooper On New Contract
Amari Cooper had another Pro Bowl season for the Cleveland Browns. In just 15 games, he had 72 catches for 1,250 yards and five touchdowns. He is entering a contract year and age 30, and he knows this may be his last chance to get paid. The former Alabama wide receiver said he is “trying to get paid this year” and didn’t attend the minicamp for fear of injury. He specifically mentioned pulling a hamstring, which can derail a season for any player.
It is unclear whether the Cleveland Browns will try to extend him before the season. A player like Amari Cooper is one the team would like to lock down even if he is approaching the wrong side of 30. GM Andrew Berry recently said Cooper is a big part of the team. It would not be shocking if the two sides were working out a deal and something would be announced later in the off-season.
2024 Outlook
The Cleveland Browns would love to improve on last season. If they can go 11-6 with the roster they had last year, it stands to reason they could be even better in 2024. Their offensive line should be back to full strength, as should more of their skill-position players. Ultimately, their success comes down to whether Deshaun Watson can return to his MVP form. After the team traded a king’s ransom to the Texans and gave Watson a monster contract, he underperformed.
It won’t be easy for the Cleveland Browns. They are in one of the toughest divisions in football, with all four teams vying for a playoff spot. Outside of the division, the Chiefs, Bills, Jets, Dolphins, and Texans are all teams that have above-average quarterbacks. If the Browns are going to make a Super Bowl run, they will need to have high-level play from their entire team.
There is plenty to like about the Cleveland Browns. Myles Garrett is one of the best edge rushers in the game, and the defense is on track to have another dominant season. Amari Cooper hopes another 1,000-yard season can get him a massive contract. Can the Browns make some noise in 2024?
