The Cleveland Browns agreed to terms with former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston on Tuesday. Winston will get a one-year deal worth a maximum of $8.7 million from the Browns. He has spent the past four seasons as the backup quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. Winston will replace Joe Flacco as the backup quarterback in Cleveland with Deshaun Watson firmly entrenched as the team’s starter.

Winston was drafted No. 1 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He spent the first five years of his career in Tampa before making his way to New Orleans. Winston became expendable for the Buccaneers once Quarterback Tom Brady joined the Buccaneers in 2020 in NFL Free Agency. The year following Winston’s departure, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won Super Bowl LV
Winston has 141 passing touchdowns and 99 interceptions over his NFL career.
What Will Jameis Winston Bring To The Cleveland Browns In 2024
Winston will provide a veteran presence in a Cleveland Browns quarterback room that has been as uncertain as any in the National Football League. A shoulder injury limited Watson to six games in 2023. The Browns had five quarterbacks start games for them last year and still managed to make the NFL Playoffs with a record of 11-6. This coaching masterclass garnered Cleveland Browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski his second NFL Coach of the Year Award.
Watson, due to injury and personal issues, has played only 12 games over the past three NFL seasons. He has been unable to regain his form from years past thus far in Cleveland. Watson has been injury-prone throughout his career, and Winston is one of the best insurance policies in the National Football League.
With so much murkiness surrounding the Cleveland Browns at the game’s most important position, Winston should ease any concerns the “Dawg Pound” has heading into 2024.
