AEW News: Current AEW Champion Injured on Collision

AEW Champion, Buddy Matthews

All Elite Wrestling has been dealing with the injury bug lately and it seems that one of the AEW Champions sustained an injury on Saturday’s Collision. In a match for the vacant AEW World Trios Championships, The Patriarchy consisting of Christian Cage, Nick Wayne & Killswitch defeated the Bang Bang Gang of Austin Gunn, Colten Gunn & Juice Robinson. The belts were vacated due to “Switchblade” Jay White’s recent foot injury but one member of The Patriarchy is also injured.

Bryan Alvarez of The Wrestling Observer reported that Killswitch aka Luchasauras suffered an arm injury that is believed to be a partially torn biceps. However, he is expected to remain on television while dealing with the injury. It is unclear if that means the AEW Champion will be out of action or if he will be wrestling through the injury. It is unknown if the injury will be addressed on television either on Dynamite or Collision at this moment.

What does the injury to Killswitch mean for the AEW Champion?

The Patriarchy are one of the most over acts in All Elite Wrestling right now and putting the AEW World Trios Championships on them makes sense, especially after a head-scratching decision to vacate the titles, despite having three members of Bang Bang Gang active and available to defend the championships. However, there is a chance that this AEW Champion could be something that helps him in the long run.

Wrestlenomics reported that AEW Collision on July 20 was able to draw 472,000 viewers, the highest viewership for the weekly show since May 18. This is going to be interesting as The Patriarchy could just not wrestle as a trio until the current AEW champion is officially healed up. However, if he is going to wrestle through the injury, that could really help the story continue to go as he could be the weak link that cost the group the AEW World Trios Championships.

With some potential new blood joining All Elite Wrestling in the future with the likes of Ricochet and Bobby Lashley potentially being in the mix, this is something that could add more fresh faces to challenge Killswitch and help him look more dominant. Defeating a high-flying star like Ricochet or a powerhouse like Bobby Lashley will continue to make Killswitch look like a force. It all just matters about the severity of this injury and if it forces another vacancy for the AEW World Trios Championships.
