Dallas Cowboys Trey Lance “Close To Being A Master” Of The Offense According To Coach

Dallas Cowboys Trey Lance

The Dallas Cowboys may be in need of a quarterback after this season. Dak Prescott is in the final year of his deal, and while both sides say they want to work something out, nothing is guaranteed. It may leave Dallas to try and find a new long-term plan for the position. The future may already be on the roster. Head coach Mike McCarthy had high praise for quarterback Trey Lance after an OTA practice.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is loving what he sees out of Trey Lance. The former third-overall pick is getting plenty of reps in the offseason and likely will in the preseason as well. Dak Prescott is the clear starter and will likely rest leading up to week 1. McCarthy doesn’t think that fans will see too much of a drop-off.

“Now starting to get the timing with the routes. … He’s close to being a master of the system. He has a really high understanding. … He just needs as many reps as he can.”

A master of the system. In McCarthy’s offense, timing is everything. If Trey Lance can get the timing down, he should have success on the field. It is one thing to do this in practice. Can Lance show what he can do in the preseason for the Dallas Cowboys?

It seems unlikely the Dallas Cowboys would give up a fourth-round pick for a player they did not intend on playing. There is a real possibility Trey Lance will take over the team in 2025. If Prescott fails to lead the Cowboys on a deep playoff run again in 2024, Jerry Jones may decide to move in a different direction. It all hinges on whether Lance can become a master of the offense. He should have plenty of weapons and will be much cheaper than Prescott. It’s something to watch as the season goes on.

The Dallas Cowboys have made some interesting decisions this offseason. Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb, and Prescott all remain on their current contracts. The future is murky and depends on what happens this season. While other teams have some stability, the Dallas Cowboys could see a huge amount of roster turnover after this year. Love them or hate them, the Cowboys always come up with ways to keep all eyeballs glued to what happens with this team.
