Green Bay Packers Preparing To Lose DC Jeff Hafley In The Offseason
The Green Bay Packers are preparing for a significant change on their coaching staff as defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has emerged as a top candidate for multiple head coaching positions across the NFL. According to reports, Hafley’s departure is considered likely, which would create a critical vacancy for head coach Matt LaFleur to fill this offseason.
Green Bay Packers DC Jeff Hafley Is The Hottest Name Right Now
Hafley has become one of the hottest names on the coaching carousel after a successful tenure leading the Packers’ defense. His immediate impact has drawn widespread interest, with reports linking him to six of the eight current head coaching openings in the league. On Saturday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Hafley “has emerged as a frontrunner” for the Miami Dolphins’ head coaching job.
The connection to Miami is particularly strong, given that the Dolphins recently hired former Packers executive Jon-Eric Sullivan as their new general manager. This existing relationship could pave the way for Hafley to land his first NFL head coaching role.
The Search Begins
In anticipation of his departure, the Green Bay Packers have reportedly begun their search for a new defensive coordinator. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the team has started doing preliminary work on potential candidates to ensure a smooth transition.
The Packers have two strong internal options who could be promoted to fill the role. Defensive line coach and run game coordinator DeMarcus Covington is a highly regarded candidate, having already interviewed for the defensive coordinator positions with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets. Passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley also has previous experience as a coordinator in the NFL and would be a logical choice for the job.
Hiring from within would provide continuity for a defense that showed flashes of dominance under Hafley. However, LaFleur may also look outside the organization for a fresh perspective. The decision will be a crucial one as the team looks to build on its recent playoff appearance.
Lots Of Questions For The Coaching Staff
While the defensive staff faces uncertainty, the situation regarding LaFleur’s own future appears to be settling. After a week of speculation and reports of stalled contract talks, sources now indicate that extensions for both LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst are expected to be completed. ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted that sources “would be surprised if the Packers didnโt complete extensions with both LaFleur and Gutekunst.”
With LaFleur likely remaining at the helm, his first major task of the offseason will be to identify the right leader for the Packers’ defense, ensuring the unit can continue its development and take the next step in 2026.
