Detroit Lions Dan Campbell ‘Hopeful’ Key Defensive Piece Will Be Ready For Week 16
The Detroit Lions’ secondary has been hit with another injury concern, but head coach Dan Campbell is optimistic about the outcome. Cornerback Amik Robertson exited late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams with a hand injury, adding to the team’s defensive woes. However, Campbell provided a hopeful update on Monday, suggesting Robertson might not miss time.
Detroit Lions Head Coach Expresses Optimism
During his press conference, Campbell addressed Robertson’s status, indicating that the team is awaiting more information but is hopeful the corner can play through the issue. Robertson underwent an MRI on Monday to determine the full extent of the damage.
“Weโll see where itโs at; Iโm hopeful that heโll be able to go [against Pittsburgh], very hopeful,” Campbell told reporters. “Itโs something that can affect him a little bit, but I think weโd like to believe heโs going to have a chance to play this weekend.”
Campbell noted that Robertson’s availability will become clearer as the week progresses and the team sees how he responds in practice.
A Blow to a Battered Secondary
The injury to Robertson is the latest in a string of setbacks for a Lions secondary that has been struggling. The defense has surrendered 30 or more points in each of its last four games, and injuries have been a significant contributing factor. With the unit already thin, losing a key player like Robertson for any amount of time would be a considerable blow.
Campbell acknowledged the defensive struggles and the need to support the cornerbacks. “There are some things we can do to help,” he said, mentioning adjustments aimed at reducing stress on the pass defense without compromising the run game. The coaching staff will need to find solutions quickly as the team faces a must-win scenario.
Playoff Implications in the Final Stretch
The Lions’ recent skid has put their playoff aspirations in a precarious position. At 8-6, they are currently on the outside looking in, trailing division rivals in the race for a wild card spot. With only three games remaining, every contest is critical.
To keep their postseason dreams alive, the Lions likely need to win their final three games, starting with a crucial home matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Getting a key contributor like Amik Robertson back on the field, even if he’s playing through pain, would be a significant boost for a defense in desperate need of stability.
