Lane Kiffin on “Alarming” Airport Exit: “People Trying to Run Us Off the Road”
Lane Kiffin is no stranger to dramatic exits, but his departure from Ole Miss for the head coaching job at LSU was something else entirely. After six seasons at the helm in Oxford, Kiffin made the bombshell announcement on Sunday, leaving behind an 11-1 Rebels team on the cusp of a historic College Football Playoff appearance.
The move itself was messy. Kiffin wanted to coach Ole Miss through the playoffs, a request he says was denied by athletic director Keith Carter. This left the Egg Bowl as his final game, a sour end to a successful run.
But the real drama unfolded on his way out of town. The ride to the airport, with his son Knox, turned into a scene straight out of a movie. Kiffin didn’t hold back when describing the chaotic and “alarming” send-off he received from the Ole Miss faithful.
Kiffin Recounts Intense Drive to Airport
“I’m human,” Kiffin stated, recalling the drive. “You’ve got to call a cop that you know… because you are leaving the state.”
The scene he painted was unnerving. With his son in the car, Kiffin described a gauntlet of fury from fans he had led for six years.
“You’re driving with your son, and you’ve got to turn around. People are like screaming at you, trying to run you off the road,” he said. “I donโt know what theyโre gonna do. So that affects you.”
The hostility continued at the airport, with boos, curses, and jeers echoing as he boarded the jet to Baton Rouge. It was a visceral display of the passion that defines SEC football, a double-edged sword Kiffin knows all too well from his one-and-done season at Tennessee.
Why Lane Kiffin Ultimately Chose LSU
Despite the chaotic exit and the initial second-guessing on the flight, Lane Kiffinโs doubts vanished the moment he landed in Baton Rouge.
โWe landed last night, and when I saw the board there, and I saw the leadership, and I felt the power of this place,” he recalled. The welcome from the LSU fans stood in stark contrast to the farewell he’d just received.
At his introductory press conference, Kiffin highlighted LSU’s elite home-field advantage, its historical recruiting prowess, and NIL capabilities as key factors in his decision. He was clear that the resources available at LSU made it an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.
The Messy Handover at Ole Miss
Lane Kiffin revealed he wanted a different ending in Oxford. He had presented a plan to the Ole Miss leadership that would have allowed him to finish the season and coach the team through the College Football Playoff before officially taking the reins at LSU.
Athletic director Keith Carter, however, held firm that Kiffin needed to leave immediately. This decision meant Kiffin couldn’t address the Rebels players to explain his departure. โIt sucked,” Lane Kiffin said bluntly. “I hate that I didnโt get to explain to players why, but I also totally respect and understand the decision they had to make for the program.”
Ultimately, Lane Kiffin understands the anger. Strangely, he sees it as a backhanded compliment. โThey ainโt going to the airport and driving from all over to say all those things, yell those things, and try to run you off the road if you were doing bad,” Kiffin reasoned. “I just look at it as passionate people in the SEC.โ
