NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Eyeing Nashville, Tennessee To Host Upcoming Super Bowl
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was in Music City for the “topping out” ceremony of the new, futuristic Nissan Stadium, a $2.1 billion palace set to open in 2027. And when asked the inevitable, Goodell didn’t exactly play it coy. He all but rolled out the welcome mat.
“I think all of us at that moment had that wake-up moment that this is a Super Bowl-ready city,” Goodell said, referencing the absolute madhouse that was the 2019 NFL Draft in Nashville. “The one thing that was missing is the stage. And I think now, you’re building a great stage.”
You can almost hear the gears turning in the league office. The 2019 Draft wasn’t just a successful event; it was a seismic shift. It showed the world that Nashville isn’t just a place for bachelorette parties and honky-tonks. It’s a major league sports town that can throw a party bigger and better than almost anywhere else. Goodell knows it. The owners know it. The only thing holding them back was a stadium that wasn’t up to snuff.
So, When Can Nashville Expect the Big Game?
With the final steel beam hoisted into place, the question is no longer if Nashville will host a Super Bowl, but when. The new enclosed stadium solves the biggest hurdle. No one wants a Super Bowl played in freezing rain, and a dome guarantees perfect conditions.
The Titans and Owner Amy Adams Strunk have made their intentions clear. They didn’t just build a new house; they built a global event center.
“This new stadium means so much to our team, and to this beautiful city we call home,” Strunk said. “It is more than just a building, it is a promise to our fans, it is a gathering place for our community, and it is a big part of the future of Nashville.”
The league has its dance card filled through Super Bowl LXII in 2028 (Atlanta). That puts Super Bowl LXIII in February 2029 as the earliest possibility. Tennessee’s governor has already penned a letter to Goodell making a formal bid. But let’s not forget the competition. Las Vegas, ever the showman, is also eyeing that 2029 date.
Goodell Knows What Fans Want
It is not just about a roof and fancy seats. Goodell also touched on the modern fan experience. He knows that to get people off their couches, you need to offer more than just a football game.
“To get the fans [in the stadium], you’ve got to give them the same amenities they have at home,” Goodell said. “Technology is a big part of that. Can I watch my fantasy team? Whatever it is, you have to deliver on that expectation.”
This new stadium is being built with that philosophy in mind. It’s a statement from the Titans and the city of Nashville that they are ready for the global spotlight. For years, the city has been proving it’s a world-class destination. Now, with a “great stage” nearly complete, it’s just a matter of time before Goodell and the NFL officially give them their standing ovation.
