Chicago Bears Ben Johnson Praises Understated Quality Of TE Cole Kmet
In a game where offensive production was hard to come by, the Chicago Bears leaned on their tight ends to secure a gritty 19-17 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. While the offense as a whole fell short of its recent scoring averages, tight end Cole Kmet delivered a standout performance that earned high praise from head coach Ben Johnson for its all-around impact.
Facing a blitz-heavy scheme from Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, the Bears adjusted their game plan to feature their tight ends more prominently. Kmet, in particular, served as a reliable safety valve for quarterback Caleb Williams, leading the team with five receptions for 45 yards.
Chicago Bears TE Cole Kmet: More Than Just a Receiver
While Kmet’s contributions in the passing game were crucial, Coach Johnson’s post-game comments highlighted the veteran’s influence in less glamorous, but equally important, aspects of the game. Johnson lauded Kmet for his physicality and toughness, emphasizing that his contributions went far beyond the stat sheet.
“I thought Cole played one of his best games he has so far this year,” Johnson said during his press conference. “I get he caught a couple more balls, but I’m not even talking about that. He’s great in the running game and then pass pro we put him in some tough matchups there… and I thought he did an outstanding job throughout that.”
Kmet’s effort was particularly noticeable when he had the ball in his hands. Johnson pointed out his aggressive running style as a source of energy for the entire team. “When he was a ball carrier, you felt his presence out there,” Johnson added. “He was lowering his shoulder, he was stiff-arming. He brought our sideline to life a couple of times.”
A Complete Performance from the Tight End Group
Kmet wasn’t the only tight end to make his mark. The entire position group was heavily involved, finishing the game with a combined nine receptions for 93 yards on 12 targets—a season-high in involvement for the unit. Rookie Colston Loveland added three catches for 40 yards, including a crucial 24-yard reception on a third-and-13.
Furthermore, the group excelled in their blocking duties. According to Pro Football Focus, both Kmet (69.2) and Loveland (67.1) earned positive run-blocking grades, helping to establish a ground game against a tough Vikings front.
While the Bears’ offense will need to find more consistency moving forward, the performance against Minnesota showcased the value and versatility of the tight end position. Cole Kmet’s all-around effort proved he is more than just a pass-catcher; he is a physical tone-setter whose impact is felt across every facet of the offense. As the season progresses, expect the Bears to continue leaning on their reliable veteran tight end.
