Why Josh Williams Will Revive His Career Back At DGM
Josh Williams was fired mid-season by the now-shutdown Kaulig Xfinity team. After a much-hyped move to one of the best Xfinity teams, his time there was considered disappointing. Not even making the playoffs and matching the potential he showed in ARCA and with DGM. But could reuniting bring his best back?
Josh Williams’ Time at DGM
His time at DGM before he went viral showed that he’s way more than one cool moment, and there’s potential behind one of NASCAR’s biggest and most likeable personalities. He began racing in Xfinity in 2016 after he won two races as an owner driver in ARCA along with multiple top five finishes in points, nothing to scoff at.
From the start, he began racing for Mario Gosselin back when he called his team King Autosport. He was initially part time, but as soon as Mario switched the names from King Autosport to DGM Racing, Josh Williams was given a full time seat.
Here he helped the Florida based team turn from backmarkers to a solid midpack operation. With his most notable season being the COVID struck 2020 season, when he had a phenomenal six top tens on a team that deserved none and finished 15th in points, barely outside the playoffs.
But he’d only get one top ten from 2021 to 2022, which is really bad when you also remember he got five DNQs at that time too. But 2023 was a rebound, with him having three top tens even at New Hampshire, a driver’s track.
But that’s not the most notable part of his season. No, that was easily what he did at Atlanta. After an early incident in Atlanta, Josh Williams was trying to continue his race with a car that wasn’t all too damaged.
Josh Williams’ Sudden Fame and Kaulig’s Shame
But a piece of debris came off his car, so NASCAR asked him to go to the garage for extending the caution. Most NASCAR drivers would’ve driven it to the garage and complained the first chance they got. Josh Williams went out a lot more flamboyantly, though.
Parking his car in the middle of the track and walking back to pit road. Blowing kisses and giving a peace sign as he did so. Overnight he went from being a good midpack driver to a superstar, and Kaulig was more than happy to take advantage and give him a ride.
But he struggled on a team that’s won a regular season championship, and in his first season there, he was still winning races but not getting a single top five, not being in a playoff position, and always being statistically the worst driver, which put the brakes on his hype. But a return to his old stomping ground could be exactly what he needs.
Why Josh Williams’s Career and Rep Will Revive In His Return to DGM
Josh Williams has had some good seasons and some bad seasons, being extremely inconsistent. Which means he has all the markings of a sensitive driver. A Daniel Riccardo type that is great when everything lines up, but very specific things have to line up.
But why should anyone believe that his return to DGM should see the best of Josh Williams return too? His last two of his last full-time seasons at DGM were 2023 and 2020 (in 2022 he started at BJ McLeod and then was fired halfway through.) We’re two of his best.
Showing it’s a car and environment he’s familiar with, and if the crew chief was the issue, DGM has got that covered too! Alongside announcing Josh Williams, they announced his CC for 2026 too, Steve Addington. The man who’s been a crew chief to Clint Bowyer, Tony Stewart, and Kyle Busch, even helping Rowdy to his breakout 2008 season.
Recently the storied crew chief has come out of retirement to help out midpack Xfinity teams. With a history of helping to get the best out of drivers. No doubt he’ll help Josh Williams too. Thanks a bunch for reading!
