Green Bay Packers: What Can Matt LaFleur Do To Shake Up The Offensive Coaching Staff?
The Green Bay Packers’ offense has faced significant challenges throughout the regular season, struggling to find consistent production. While head coach Matt LaFleur’s job is secure, the team’s offensive woes might lead him to explore changes to his coaching staff this offseason to get the unit back on track. A strategic shake-up could provide a fresh perspective and address some of the underlying issues that have plagued the team.
Green Bay Packers Potential Coaching Moves
One of the most impactful potential changes would be to shift Adam Stenavich’s focus back to the offensive line. Stenavich was promoted from offensive line coach and run game coordinator to offensive coordinator in 2022. While the offense has had moments of success under his tenure, the offensive line, particularly in run blocking, has not performed at the elite level it once did.
Stenavich is widely regarded as an excellent offensive line coach. Allowing him to dedicate his full attention to the trenches could help solve the protection issues and inconsistent run game that have stalled the offense. Reassigning his broader offensive coordinator duties would let him return to his area of expertise, strengthening the foundation of the entire offensive unit.
Realign Passing Game Responsibilities
With the offense’s aerial attack also lacking consistency, LaFleur could look to reconfigure the passing game coordination. The current passing game coordinator, Jason Vrable, has a background primarily focused on coaching wide receivers. To bring a more quarterback-centric and schematic view, LaFleur could turn to familiar faces already on staff.
Senior offensive assistant Luke Getsy and defensive analyst Nathaniel Hackett both have experience as quarterback coaches and offensive coordinators. They were key assistants during the peak of the Packers’ offense a few years ago. Tapping one of them to take over the passing game could bring a more holistic approach to scheme and play design, helping to generate more favorable matchups and consistent production through the air.
Consider External Additions
Matt LaFleur has shown a willingness to bring in outside voices to help his staff. Last season, he hired Robert Saleh as an analyst after his dismissal from the New York Jets. This offseason, he could do something similar by looking at recently fired head coaches with offensive backgrounds.
Names like Brian Callahan (formerly of the Titans) or Brian Daboll (formerly of the Giants) could be valuable additions. Even in an analyst or consultant role, these coaches could offer a different perspective, introduce new concepts, and help LaFleur identify and correct the offense’s weaknesses. Adding an experienced offensive mind from outside the organization could provide the fresh ideas needed to help the Packers’ offense evolve and regain its elite form.
