Los Angeles Lakers DeAndre Ayton Makes Stunning Admission After Loss To Hawks
The Los Angeles Lakers began their five-game road trip with a thud, suffering a blowout loss to a heavily depleted Atlanta Hawks team on Saturday night. After the game, Lakers center DeAndre Ayton offered a candid assessment, admitting the team came into the contest with the wrong mindset and paid the price.
Los Angeles Lakers Stumble to Begin Road Trip
On paper, the matchup seemed to favor the Lakers. The Hawks were playing on the second night of a back-to-back and were missing most of their key players, including Trae Young, Jalen Johnson, and Kristaps Porzingis. Despite the circumstances, Atlanta played with more energy and aggression from the opening tip, pulling away in the second half for a comfortable victory.
The loss was a clear step backward for a Lakers team that had been playing well. Speaking after the game, Ayton didn’t make excuses, instead pointing to a critical mental lapse from his team. He admitted they may have taken their opponent too lightly.
“Really probably leaving those guys underestimated and not keeping those guys accountable, forgetting about them,” Ayton said. “This is the NBA and those are NBA players. They deceived us a little with their shotmaking.”
A Hard Pill to Swallow
Ayton acknowledged that the Lakers should have known better, having recently won a similar “schedule loss” game on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers while being shorthanded themselves. The experience should have prepared them for a hungry Hawks team looking to prove themselves.
“Thatโs why itโs kind of like a hard pill to swallow, for real,” Ayton reflected. “We know what weโre coming up against and seeing how they played, they played phenomenal, but us not even competing in a sense. It looks bad on paper and looks bad on film.”
The veteran center pointed to a lack of defensive cohesion as the primary issue on the court. “It just wasnโt connected at all, discombobulated a little bit with how fast it was moving,” he explained. “Those guys were hungry, next man up mentality and it really showed up… They were in our paint and we couldnโt do nothing about it.”
A Wake-Up Call for Los Angeles
The loss serves as a harsh reminder that there are no easy nights in the NBA. Head coach JJ Redick was brief with his postgame comments, clearly disappointed with his team’s lack of preparedness and effort. For a team with championship aspirations, getting outplayed by an opponent’s bench unit is unacceptable.
As the Lakers continue a difficult road trip, this loss must serve as a wake-up call. Ayton’s comments highlight a need for greater focus and respect for every opponent, regardless of who is in uniform. The team will look to bounce back and prove they’ve learned their lesson when they face the Charlotte Hornets on Monday.
